Interior designer Charlotte Moss has shared several cost-effective methods to add character and charm to any space. Whether you're working on a small DIY project or planning a full home transformation, her insights can help you create a unique and inviting environment.

Keep It Simple

One of the key strategies Moss uses is keeping things simple. The living room in the Southern Living Idea House features an ambitious mix of colors and patterns, but upon closer inspection, it's actually quite restrained. Moss explains that the palette is based on greens and browns, with shades of these colors creating a cohesive look without the need for a strict color scheme. The curtain fabric from Schumacher inspired the design, connecting the indoor space with the outdoors. A cerise lampshade adds a single burst of contrasting color, drawing attention and enhancing the overall visual appeal.

Be Bold with Paint

Paint is a powerful tool for transforming a room on a budget. Moss chose Sherwin-Williams Chartreuse for the living room, which adds vibrancy and energy. She notes that the color works well due to the abundance of natural light and the light fabric used in the space. In other areas, such as the mudroom and laundry room, she used Studio Blue Green, inspired by childhood trips to Colonial Williamsburg. This approach ensures that even utilitarian spaces feel part of the overall design. Moss emphasizes that paint is an affordable and effective way to make a significant impact.

Put Fabric to Use

Moss encourages creativity through the use of fabric. She often repurposes items, such as using a linen tablecloth from Italy to make cafe curtains. This DIY approach not only saves money but also adds a personal touch to the space. She also suggests using inexpensive materials like gingham or muslin to create a luxurious look. By being generous with these materials, you can achieve a high-end appearance without breaking the bank.

Consider Antiques

Antiques can add value and character to a space. Moss believes that many people overlook the potential of antique pieces, which can offer a sense of history and uniqueness. She points out that antique wooden furniture, such as a secretary in the bedroom, can be found at a lower price than new alternatives. These pieces bring patina, contrast, and drama to contemporary rooms, making them a valuable addition to any home.

Trick the Eye

Creating the illusion of architecture without structural changes is another technique Moss employs. The foyer features striped wallpaper that gives the impression of dimension, even though the ceiling is flat. The black and white marble tiles in the entryway add a classic checkerboard pattern, giving the house a sense of age and gravitas. This effect can be achieved with ceramic tiles that have a weathered appearance, offering a similar aesthetic without the need for major renovations.

Create Flow Between Rooms

Moss has a talent for ensuring that all rooms in the house flow together seamlessly. She uses color to unify the spaces, drawing inspiration from the landscape and each other. By incorporating hits of greens, creams, and browns in different proportions, she creates a subtle connection between rooms. This approach can be applied by using your chosen color on walls in one room and on throw pillows in another, maintaining a cohesive look throughout the home.

To maintain focus during the design process, Moss suggests setting imaginary parameters. She created an imaginary client for the bedroom, based on a young girl interested in fashion and quilting. This approach helps avoid unnecessary purchases and keeps the design on track. The bedroom features elements like old chintz, quilts, and collaging, with a lampshade made from a quilt fragment. This DIY approach adds a personal touch and enhances the overall aesthetic.
