Aga Khan University: A Leading Institution in Health and Education

Aga Khan University (AKU) was established in 1983 as Pakistan’s first private university. It is a not-for-profit institution that operates under the Aga Khan Development Network, one of the world's largest private development organizations. Over the years, AKU has expanded its reach to several countries, including Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Afghanistan, and the United Kingdom, starting in the early 2000s.

Initially founded as a health sciences university, AKU has grown to become one of the largest private healthcare providers in Pakistan and East Africa. Its hospitals have been pioneers in obtaining accreditation from the U.S.-based Joint Commission International, setting high standards for healthcare delivery in these regions. The university's research and graduates have significantly influenced health policy and practice both nationally and internationally.

In recent years, AKU has broadened its academic offerings beyond health sciences. It now includes programs in teacher education, the study of Muslim civilizations, journalism, early childhood development, and public policy. In September 2023, the university launched its Faculty of Arts and Sciences, aiming to cultivate future leaders across diverse fields. Additional graduate professional schools are also in the planning stages.

Aga Khan University in Kenya

In Kenya, AKU offers a wide range of academic programs, particularly in nursing, midwifery, and medical education. The university operates a modern, state-of-the-art University Centre in Nairobi, which supports both academic and professional development. This facility houses various academic units, health education programs, and graduate professional schools, along with support services.

The distinctive 37,500-square-meter building consists of two blocks—the North Tower and the South Tower—connected by an atrium bridge. Designed by the internationally renowned architecture firm Payette, known for its work at institutions like Harvard, MIT, Princeton, and Columbia, the building serves as a hub for learning and innovation. The University Centre is located on 3rd Parklands Avenue, off Limuru Road.

AKU received its charter from the Government of Kenya on June 11, 2021. The university heavily subsidizes its academic programs and provides scholarships to 9 out of 10 of its students in East Africa, making quality education more accessible.
