Air Canada Introduces Major Changes to Its Aeroplan Loyalty Program

Air Canada has unveiled a significant transformation of its Aeroplan loyalty program, aiming to "redefine how members earn Aeroplan points and achieve Aeroplan elite status." The most impactful change involves shifting from a distance-based earning system to one that rewards members based on their spending. This shift is set to take effect at the start of next year, with the introduction of a new single path for achieving Aeroplan Elite status known as Status Qualifying Credits.

This move aligns with trends seen in other major airlines, although some have faced backlash. For example, British Airways experienced negative reactions when it made similar changes, leading to some reversals of its policies. Air Canada's decision reflects a broader industry trend toward rewarding customers based on their financial commitment rather than just the miles they travel.

A New Model for Aeroplan

In a recent statement, Air Canada announced that starting January 1, 2026, its Aeroplan program will transition to a spend-based earning model. The airline claims this will better recognize members who spend more and travel frequently with Air Canada, while maintaining the exclusivity of Aeroplan Elite status.

The change is expected to affect frequent travelers who previously relied on long-haul flights that offered more points per dollar spent. These individuals, often referred to as "mileage runners," may find their strategy less effective under the new system. Scott O’Leary, Air Canada’s VP of Loyalty & Product, explained:

"Aeroplan has grown into one of the most rewarding and widely used travel loyalty programs. Our most engaged members do more than just fly with us - they earn with our partners, choose flexible fares, and carry Aeroplan credit cards. These changes help us better recognize their loyalty and keep improving the experience."

Key Changes to the Program

At the core of the changes is the shift to spend-based earnings. Starting in 2026, members will earn at least one point for every eligible Canadian dollar spent. However, taxes, fees, and third-party charges will not count toward these earnings.

Members with higher status levels will see increased benefits, as they can earn between two and six points per eligible C$1 spent, depending on their tier. This means that the more members engage with Air Canada through purchases, the more points they can accumulate.

In addition to earning points, the way members progress through the different tiers of the Aeroplan program has also been revised. Air Canada has introduced Status Qualifying Credits, which members can earn up to four per eligible C$1 spent. These credits are also available through corresponding credit card purchases, offering additional ways to reach elite status.

Benefits for Current Members

Air Canada emphasized that the current criteria for achieving Aeroplan Elite status will remain unchanged for the remainder of 2025, including the process for qualifying for 2026. This ensures that existing members won’t face sudden disruptions.

The airline also plans to offer bonus promotions to help members accelerate their progress toward elite status. These incentives aim to support loyal customers while encouraging continued engagement with the Aeroplan program.

Balancing Rewards and Loyalty

Air Canada’s goal is to reward its most dedicated and active members by recognizing their spending habits. The new system is designed to provide more flexibility and value for those who consistently choose Air Canada for their travel needs.

However, the airline is also mindful of potential concerns from lower-spending members. It aims to maintain interest and participation across all customer segments. The experience of British Airways serves as a cautionary tale, where changes to its loyalty program led to a loss of customers who felt their loyalty was no longer adequately rewarded.

By introducing a spend-based model, Air Canada hopes to create a more equitable and rewarding system for its frequent flyers while ensuring the continued success of the Aeroplan program.
