Amazon's First OpenAI Partnership Boosts Wall Street Gains

Amazon and OpenAI Collaboration Sparks Wall Street Optimism
Amazon's recent partnership with OpenAI, the creators of ChatGPT, has generated positive reactions from Wall Street analysts. Although this collaboration is a small step in the broader competition for AI cloud business against Microsoft, it has already contributed to a rise in Amazon's stock price.
On Tuesday, Amazon announced that OpenAI's open weight models are now available to customers of its Amazon Web Services (AWS) cloud platform. These tools will be offered through AWS's Bedrock and SageMaker platforms, which assist enterprises in developing AI applications using their own data. This move is seen as a strategic step forward for AWS, especially following recent cloud revenue results that raised questions about whether Amazon was falling behind its competitors.
Analysts View the Move Positively
Analysts have responded positively to the announcement. BofA Securities analyst Justin Post highlighted that while the addition of OpenAI to the AWS platform is not a comprehensive deal, it represents a positive initial step in the relationship between the two companies. He noted that AWS still does not benefit from OpenAI infrastructure spending like its peers, but can now generate revenue from services around OpenAI's models leveraging its vertically integrated AI stack.
This development comes at a time when Amazon's stock has been under pressure. However, on Wednesday, Amazon's shares rose by 3.7% to 221.66, pushing back above its 50-day moving average after previously tumbling below the key level.
A "Powerhouse Combination"
Matt Garman, CEO of Amazon Web Services, described the collaboration as a "powerhouse combination" on LinkedIn. He emphasized that this partnership brings together OpenAI's leading technology with AWS's scale, security, and deployment capabilities.
It's worth noting that OpenAI is also partnered with Microsoft, which is one of the startup's largest investors. Microsoft gained a significant AI advantage as OpenAI's exclusive cloud provider. However, parts of that deal were adjusted in January to allow OpenAI to train its models on infrastructure from other cloud providers, such as Oracle and CoreWeave.
Open Weight Models and Broader Partnerships
Unlike OpenAI's more powerful "closed" AI models, the new open weight models are freely available to developers and through a range of partners. The list includes Hugging Face, AWS, Microsoft Azure, and Databricks, according to a blog post from OpenAI.
New Street Research analyst Dan Salmon noted that while the arrangement is a nice first step, it is still a long way from offering OpenAI's closed models, including the upcoming GPT-5. He pointed out that AWS already offers access to open source models from Meta Platforms and Alphabet, making the addition of OpenAI's models not groundbreaking.
Amazon's Stock Performance and Earnings Concerns
Despite the recent gains, Amazon's stock is trading nearly flat so far this year. Shares fell 8% following Amazon's Q2 earnings report, which showed cloud growth in line with estimates. While Amazon's e-commerce business remains its main revenue source, AWS drives the majority of profits.
Growth for AWS has come back into focus as concerns about tariffs have largely faded. This allowed Amazon to bounce back from lows in April before the earnings setback. However, slower growth compared to Microsoft and Google raised concerns that the two smaller cloud competitors were more successful in winning AI business.
Future Potential and Strategic Outlook
BofA's Post remains constructive on Amazon's AI potential and sees the OpenAI arrangement as a possible catalyst for further growth. He noted that any future OpenAI deal may be subject to contractual limitations with Microsoft, but AWS would be very interested in adding more OpenAI capabilities. With its vast customer reach, AWS could offer OpenAI significant value as the company focuses on building out its enterprise business.
As the AI landscape continues to evolve, Amazon's collaboration with OpenAI marks an important step in its strategy to remain competitive in the cloud computing market.
