Calvin Harris Shares Wife's Placenta Photo, Sparks Outrage: 'A Warning Would've Helped'

Calvin Harris shared the joy of welcoming his first child with his wife, Vicki Hope, but what has captured public attention is not the newborn baby itself, but rather a shocking image of the placenta. The "We Found Love" DJ posted a series of photos documenting his wife’s homebirth, including some incredibly detailed shots of the placenta that have caused quite a stir online. If you’re easily disturbed by such images, it might be best to skip this post.
Harris took to Instagram this week to announce the arrival of their son, Micah. “20th of July our boy arrived. Micah is here!” he wrote, accompanied by a heartfelt message. “My wife is a superhero and I am in complete awe of her primal wisdom! Just so grateful. We love you so much Micah ❤️❤️❤️.”
In one photo, Harris is seen sitting on a couch on a patio, cradling his newborn in one hand. Another shows him leaning in close to look at the baby, who is being held by Hope in an inflatable pool where she gave birth. A third image captures the peaceful setting—beautiful outdoor views of blue skies and trees over a balcony, with a table decorated with candles and flowers. It all looks serene and calming.
However, the tone shifts dramatically when Harris shares a close-up of the placenta on the fourth slide. The organ, still bloody, is laid out on a towel, with the umbilical cord shaped into a heart. Posting such a graphic image online was clearly a deliberate choice.
Other photos show the placenta being dehydrated and eventually turned into pills. While this practice isn’t new—celebrities like Chrissy Teigen, Kourtney Kardashian, Kim Kardashian, and Alicia Silverstone have done it before—it’s still surprising to see such a clear and detailed image of the placenta.
The internet reaction was mixed. Among the well-wishers, like Katy Perry, who commented, “there it is ✨,” were many who were not pleased with the content. One user wrote, “A disclaimer about the placenta would've been nice tho!” which received over 36,000 likes. Another said, “I swiped and got more than what I asked for…” while another joked, “Did not have viewing a placenta on my bingo card for today.” Some even expressed disapproval, saying, “Congrats on the baby, but hell no to the rest.”
On the other hand, some defended the post. One person wrote, “All this people complaining about the placenta, but watch crime and murders before going bed …. 🤯 😂” Another added, “Congratulations! Thank you for normalising home birth (and placentas!) with these beautiful pictures. What a dream ❤️.”
If you're considering eating your placenta, it's important to understand the risks involved. According to Texas Children's Hospital, the placenta is not sterile. “It contains toxins like mercury and lead, as well as potential bacteria and viruses,” they explained. “It even has its own bacterial culture. Any infection during labor will most likely be present in the placental tissue. Cooking the placenta decreases these pathogens, but cannot get rid of them completely.”
Dr. Sharon Young, a medical anthropologist at the University of Nevada, has also spoken about the lack of research on the potential benefits or harms of consuming the placenta. In a previous interview, she emphasized the importance of considering individual health conditions and possible risks. “Consider any factors that may increase an individual's risk such as certain health conditions or infections that may affect the placenta, or exposure to harmful substances that can accumulate in the placenta,” she said.
While the decision is ultimately up to the individual, it might be wise to avoid sharing graphic images of the placenta online. For those who are easily disturbed by blood, it’s a small courtesy that could make a big difference.
