A Career of Leadership and Growth

The university operates six campuses across Michigan and enrolls approximately 5,000 students. Prior to joining Davenport, Pappas served as president of National-Louis University in Chicago, Lake Michigan College in Benton Harbor, and Harford Community College in Bel Air, Maryland.

The Board of Trustees, led by Paula Cunningham, will begin the search for a new president in the coming months.

Cunningham praised Pappas’ leadership, stating, “He guides with vision, optimism, integrity and a strong dedication to Davenport’s mission.” She added that his efforts have significantly impacted students, faculty, and staff, and that his retirement is well-earned.

Pappas highlighted the dedication of the Davenport community, noting their commitment to supporting students from all backgrounds. He also expressed pride in how the university adapted during the COVID-19 pandemic, transitioning to online learning within a weekend. Additionally, the university invested in physical and mental health initiatives, launching a Wellness Center and introducing new degree programs in Mental Health Counseling and Psychiatric Nursing.

Expansion and Development

During Pappas’ tenure, Davenport expanded its academic offerings. The number of bachelor’s degrees increased from 23 to 37, and graduate degrees rose from nine to 31. New facilities were built, including the Robert W. Sneden Center and the Donald W. Maine College of Business at the W.A. Lettinga Grand Rapids Campus. The university also constructed a new athletic complex, Farmer’s Field, and joined the NCAA Division II GLIAC Conference.

Other developments included moving the Lansing Campus to a new location and renovating the Warren Campus. These advancements reflect the significant progress made under Pappas’ leadership.
