The Role of AI in Home Renovation

Artificial intelligence (AI) is increasingly becoming a part of our daily lives, from scrolling through memes to planning meals and researching products. In the realm of home renovation, AI tools like ChatGPT are proving to be valuable assets, especially during the initial stages of design and planning.

For homeowners looking to embark on a renovation project, AI can offer a starting point by generating ideas and visualizing potential layouts. However, it's important to understand that while AI can be helpful, it doesn't replace the expertise of a professional designer.

Expert Insights on Using AI for Home Design

Jennifer Jones, principal designer at Niche Interiors, and Niki Cheng, co-founder of 18th Street Design Collective, shared their insights on how to effectively use AI tools like ChatGPT in home design projects.

According to Jones, "ChatGPT is a great tool for quickly showing general ideas for room layouts and helping clients visualize how a space will feel." She emphasizes that it works best for visualizing broader ideas rather than specific furniture shapes or accurate textures.

Cheng adds, "For non-designers using AI tools, I’d say treat it like a mood board, not a blueprint. The ideas can spark inspiration, but you still need a trained eye to adapt them into something functional and beautiful."

How ChatGPT Can Assist with Home Renovations

When working with ChatGPT, the more precise your input, the better the results. For instance, if you're looking for paint recommendations, you can describe or upload a picture of a room, and the AI will suggest colors, finish options, and even brands.

ChatGPT can also help with smaller tasks, such as planning the layout of a gallery wall or providing options for updating a light fixture. It can generate a room layout quickly if you input your room dimensions and furniture requirements. Even if you don't follow its recommendations, it may inspire fresh ideas or combinations.

Jones notes that "our designers use ChatGPT to change paint colors in a room to quickly help clients visualize options before committing." She also mentions that a client recently used ChatGPT to decide on accent pillows for his sectional sofa.

Limitations of AI in Interior Design

Despite its benefits, AI has its limitations. While it can analyze a lot of information, it can't replace a human being standing in your home. ChatGPT might default to basic ideas if you're not extremely specific, and it may not align with the layout or aesthetic of your home.

Cheng highlights that "the biggest limitation I’ve seen is accuracy." AI-generated layouts often look great at a glance, but the scale and proportions of furniture can be off when applied to real rooms. Colors also tend to render in a way that doesn’t translate well to physical materials.

Additionally, ChatGPT lacks the expertise of an interior designer or a dedicated DIYer. While it might suggest an optimal living room layout, it could place your couch in a heavily-trafficked area or recommend adding a lamp to a spot without an outlet.

Jones advises homeowners to "understand its limitations and use it to help make singular design decisions rather than relying on it to design an entire room."

What Information Does ChatGPT Need?

To create a room layout, ChatGPT requires detailed information, including the room's dimensions, shape, door and window locations and dimensions, details on built-in features like closets, and furniture requirements. You can simplify the process by uploading photos or your own sketch of a floor plan, but for the most accurate results, provide dimensions of the room and as many pieces of furniture as possible.

Personal Experience with ChatGPT’s Design Suggestions

During my own test, I asked ChatGPT to help create the best layout for my home office. It requested a long list of information, which included measurements, locations, and details about built-in features. After providing the necessary data, ChatGPT generated recommendations for an optimal office layout, including style tips and reasoning.

While the initial layout seemed solid, some of the suggestions didn't work in practice. For example, moving a table to the south wall created an awkward empty corner and blocked access to storage space. The AI also came up with some wacky ideas that contradicted each other, such as suggesting a webcam setup that required moving my desk.

After simplifying my requests and treating it like a brainstorming session, I received more focused advice on paint recommendations that emphasized natural light. It provided ideas for an accent wall, three brand-specific shades, and suggested different sheens based on the desired aesthetic.

Final Thoughts on Using AI for Home Projects

Overall, I wouldn't fully trust ChatGPT alone to rearrange one of my rooms or help with starting a renovation. While it had some useful ideas, it didn't consider factors like electrical outlets and air vents. However, I would definitely use it to help brainstorm for smaller projects, such as paint color recommendations.

While AI can't replace an expert interior designer, it could serve as a useful assistant on future home improvement endeavors.
