Major Questions About Disney’s Recent Announcements

Disney made a significant number of announcements on Wednesday, following the release of its second-quarter earnings report. These updates revolved around the company's future plans, particularly focusing on its streaming services. The news has sparked several questions about the integration of Disney+ and Hulu, the new ESPN streamer, and the acquisition of NFL content.

Disney+ and Hulu Integration

One of the most notable announcements was the decision to fold Hulu into the Disney+ app entirely. This means that the standalone Hulu app will eventually be phased out, with the shutdown expected to occur in 2026. However, the exact date remains unclear. A hint came from the fact that the NFL Draft will stream on all Disney services in 2026, including Hulu. This suggests that the standalone Hulu app may remain available until at least April.

Another question is whether the Hulu + Live TV feature will also be integrated into Disney+. It seems logical that this would happen, although it won't be included in the standard Disney+ price. Those who opt for the live TV component of Hulu will likely access it alongside other on-demand content within the Disney+ app.

Will all Hulu content be available on Disney+? Initially, when Disney+ first launched Hulu titles in late 2023, not all of the Hulu library was available due to licensing agreements. However, with the elimination of the standalone Hulu app, Disney+ will have all of the Hulu content available. It remains to be seen if there are any significant reductions in the content library.

The cost of Disney+ with Hulu integrated is another point of speculation. The current Disney Bundle with Disney+ and Hulu’s ad-supported plans costs $11 monthly, but it's possible that Disney may raise the price of Disney+. Whether it reaches as high as $16 per month or more is uncertain.

ESPN’s Streamer and NFL Media

A key question is whether cable subscribers will get access to ESPN’s new standalone streamer. According to Disney CEO Bob Iger and other executives, there will be no differentiation between traditional pay-TV viewers and those using the new streaming model. Therefore, anyone with access to ESPN channels via cable, satellite, or live TV streaming can log into the ESPN app without extra cost.

Regarding NFL RedZone, it will not be available on the new ESPN streamer. However, it will continue to be available on NFL+’s Premium tier. ESPN has also announced bundles of its new streamer with NFL+ Premium, allowing fans to watch NFL RedZone, though the price details were not disclosed.

Will NFL Network retain international game broadcasts? NFL Network will still offer seven games per year, both on linear TV and through the new ESPN streaming service. Some international games could end up on other ESPN channels.

ESPN is also considering offering more alternate NFL broadcasts. With the right to create alternate telecasts for the NFL Draft, the company may produce streamer-specific altcasts for each presentation of the draft on various platforms.

Some NFL games will be available on-demand on ESPN’s new streamer, including "Monday Night Football" replays. Additionally, Disney+ will gain more NFL content thanks to the new NFL deal, allowing customers to watch select NFL simulcasts and highlights.

Fantasy and betting features are also being integrated into NFL broadcasts. ESPN will take over the NFL’s fantasy football product, offering enhanced interactive features for fans.

ESPN Secures WWE PLE Rights

In a surprising announcement, Disney revealed it acquired the rights to stream WWE’s premium live events (PLEs) starting in 2026. This means that the new ESPN streamer will be required to watch these events unless accessed through a pay-TV distributor.

WWE PLEs will not switch back to a PPV format. They will be available on the app at no additional cost starting in 2026. Some PLEs will also air on ESPN linear channels, but not all. The specific distribution strategy between ESPN and WWE has yet to be officially detailed.
