How Mega Millions Jackpots Are Estimated

The Mega Millions website explains that the consortium meets every Tuesday and Friday morning to determine the estimated jackpots for the next two drawings. Sales forecasts play a crucial role in this process. The estimated cash value of the jackpots and the advertised annuity values are based on these projections, with the annuity value tied to the 30-year U.S. Treasuries rate, which can fluctuate daily.

In the past, jackpots rolled over at varying amounts depending on ticket sales. However, during the current streak, the jackpot increased by exactly $10 million for the first 10 rollovers. This pattern was also seen in the previous streak, where the first six rollovers increased the jackpot by $10 million each time.

What Changed in Mega Millions?

Several key changes were implemented in April. One of the most notable is the removal of one lottery ball, reducing the number of Mega Balls from 25 to 24. This change improves the overall odds of winning any prize to 1 out of 23. Additionally, ticket prices have risen to $5, more than double the previous price of $2.

Another significant update is the introduction of automatic multipliers for prizes. Under the new rules, all tickets come with a built-in multiplier that randomly increases the prize by 2X to 10X. This eliminates the need for an extra $1 fee for the Megaplier feature.
