A New Era of Neuroinclusive Housing in Red Bank

Red Bank, New Jersey is set to welcome a groundbreaking development that promises to redefine housing for neurodivergent individuals. THRIVE Red Bank, the first-of-its-kind neuroinclusive apartment building, has officially broken ground and is expected to open its doors in 2027. This innovative project marks a significant step forward in creating supportive living environments for neurodivergent adults.

The three-story residential complex will span 34,000 square feet and include 32 one-bedroom apartments designed for independent living. The first floor will feature a range of amenities aimed at fostering community engagement and well-being. These include a shared community space, a teaching kitchen, a health and wellness area, and a sensory room. The facility will be located at 273 Shrewsbury Ave. at Drs. James Parker Blvd., offering residents access to a vibrant and inclusive neighborhood.

The groundbreaking ceremony took place on July 30, bringing together a diverse group of stakeholders, including THRIVE Red Bank Partners, board members from Parents With A Plan, representatives from the Rutgers Center for Adult Autism Services, public officials, and neurodivergent advocates. This event highlighted the collaborative effort behind the project and the importance of creating sustainable housing solutions for neurodivergent individuals.

Karen Fluharty, founder and general partner of THRIVE Red Bank and a single mother to her neurodivergent son Ryan, emphasized the personal significance of the initiative. “After an exhaustive search nationwide, we were really shocked by the lack of options, the lack of quality, and the lack of innovation in housing and programming for the neurodivergent population,” she said. Fluharty’s determination stems from the challenges many families face when their children age out of educational services and struggle to find stable housing.

This issue is not unique to Fluharty’s family. Millions of families across New Jersey and the United States grapple with the same concerns as they plan for the futures of their young adults. “Frequently, these young adults ‘fall off the services cliff’ when they age out of the educational entitlement system at 21, and far too many ‘graduate to the couch,’ living at home with parents who are aging,” Fluharty explained. Her goal is to ensure that no one faces this dilemma, providing a safe and supportive environment for neurodivergent individuals to thrive.

In 2019, Fluharty partnered with longtime friend and colleague John Klein to establish THRIVE Red Bank. Their mission was further strengthened through collaboration with Parents With A Plan, an NJ-based nonprofit dedicated to expanding neuroinclusive housing environments. Together, they aim to develop innovative residential models that support the long-term success and well-being of neurodivergent individuals.

John Klein, managing partner of THRIVE Red Bank, sees the project as a blueprint for scalable neuroinclusive housing solutions. “I believe THRIVE Red Bank will serve as a national model of scalable neuroinclusive housing solutions,” he said. With a background in real estate development and community engagement, Klein brings valuable expertise to the initiative.

Robin Klein, general partner of THRIVE and a founding board member of Parents With A Plan, added that Red Bank is uniquely suited to be the first location for THRIVE. “Red Bank also offers our future residents genuine community connection,” she said. Residents will have access to public transit, which is essential for many neurodivergent adults who do not drive, as well as a vibrant mix of businesses and nonprofit organizations that provide opportunities for employment, volunteering, and cultural engagement.

Mayor William (Billy) Portman of Red Bank praised the project, stating it presents an opportunity for the city to lead in community development and inclusion. “This is an opportunity for Red Bank to pave the way for true community development projects and create meaningful, authentic community inclusion,” he said.

THRIVE Red Bank is also forming a public/private partnership with the Rutgers Center for Adult Autism Services (RCAAS). This collaboration will bring together expertise from real estate, academia, and community building to create a new standard of excellence in neuroinclusive housing. Residents will benefit from the clinical expertise of Rutgers’ senior faculty and students, while university students will gain hands-on training and supervision.

According to John Klein, the need for neuroinclusive housing is greater than ever. “There has never been greater need for the neuroinclusive housing we are creating at THRIVE Red Bank,” he said. The project is supported by local leaders, including Mayor Portman, N.J. State Senator Vin Gopal, and Monmouth County Commissioner Thomas Arnone.

Applications for THRIVE Red Bank are now open, and more information about the project can be found online. The building will open at 273 Shrewsbury Ave. at Drs. James Parker Blvd., Red Bank.
