Heritage Insurance Hits Milestone with $48M Q2 Profit and Strong Market Expansion

Strong Q2 2025 Performance and Strategic Shifts
Heritage Insurance Holdings, Inc. (HRTG) delivered impressive results in the second quarter of 2025, with net income reaching $48 million, a significant increase from $18.9 million during the same period in 2024. This growth was attributed to several strategic initiatives, including rate adequacy, managed exposure, and enhanced underwriting discipline. The company’s leadership emphasized that these efforts have contributed to a stronger earnings foundation.
The CEO, Ernesto Jose Garateix, noted that while the number of policies in-force has decreased over the past four years, the decline in the most recent quarter was the smallest since June 2021, at just over 7,700 policies. He highlighted that the company is at an inflection point, expecting a gradual increase in personal lines policies in-force during the second half of 2025 as new business production continues to grow. New business growth for the quarter was up 46% compared to the second quarter of 2024, marking the highest level since 2022.
Garateix pointed to strong performance in the Northeast, particularly in New York, as well as Virginia in the Mid-Atlantic and Florida. These regions are benefiting from achieved rate adequacy and expanded capacity for new business. Florida, in particular, has seen positive developments due to recent legislative reforms, which have improved the economics of writing profitable business and reduced frivolous lawsuits.
The CEO also mentioned ongoing IT investments, specifically the third year of a Guidewire platform conversion, which is expected to be completed by next year. Additionally, Heritage announced refinancing and upsizing its senior credit facility to $200 million with improved terms and an extended maturity date through July 2030.

CFO Kirk Howard Lusk reported that net income for the quarter was $48.0 million or $1.55 per diluted share, a sharp increase from $18.9 million or $0.61 per diluted share in the previous year’s quarter. Gross premiums earned increased to $353.6 million, up 1% from $350.1 million in the prior year quarter. Net premiums earned rose to $196.3 million from $190.3 million. Strategic Focus and Market Expansion
Garateix signaled a shift toward moderate growth in policies in-force for the second half of 2025, with acceleration expected in 2026. He emphasized that the company is pivoting its growth strategy, aiming to return to moderate growth before accelerating in 2026. The CEO pointed to strong new business momentum in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic, with Florida and other regions poised for growth as rate adequacy is achieved.
Lusk added that as the company expands into recently opened geographies, it expects growth to accelerate at a managed pace. The CFO also addressed questions about agent enthusiasm and competition, noting that agents are enthusiastic about the company's expansion and that the company is approximately 90% to 95% open in its geographic areas.
On rate trends, Lusk indicated that rates are expected to rise in most geographies, though not to the extent seen in previous years. He also highlighted that recent rate approvals in the Northeast will help accelerate growth in that region.
Analyst Engagement and Sentiment
Analysts expressed positive sentiment throughout the call, focusing on continued growth and favorable trends in losses and rates. Management maintained a confident tone, emphasizing stabilization and growth. Compared to the previous quarter, management’s confidence increased as the company transitions into a growth phase, and analysts shifted from cautious optimism to open endorsement of results and strategy.
Quarter-over-quarter comparisons showed a shift in guidance language from cautious optimism to signaling an inflection point and the start of policy growth. Strategic focus evolved from maintaining rate adequacy and selective expansion to broad-based new business growth and market share gains. Analysts’ questions in the current quarter centered on growth, competition, and regional performance, rather than weather losses and rate adequacy as in the previous quarter.
Risks and Future Outlook
While the company remains exposed to weather and catastrophe losses, management noted a favorable trend due to improved portfolio underwriting and rate actions. Reinsurance market conditions and legislative changes in Florida remain key external factors. Analysts inquired about the sustainability of favorable claim trends, with management indicating that frequency has been trending down but is expected to stabilize.
Reserve development was also discussed, with Lusk referencing previous reserve strengthening and ongoing monitoring. Overall, the company appears well-positioned for sustained value creation, with strong earnings, improved underwriting, and disciplined expansion into new and existing markets.
