Hulu is set to take on a new role in the international landscape of Disney+. The streaming service will replace the Star tile on Disney+ outside of the United States. This move marks a significant step for Hulu, signaling its transition into a global entertainment brand.

This development comes shortly after Disney finalized its acquisition of Comcast’s stake in Hulu last month. The deal solidified Disney's control over the streaming platform, which was initially a joint venture involving multiple media companies. Since 2019, Hulu has been under Disney's operational control as part of the company's broader strategy to consolidate its streaming services.

In its latest earnings report, Disney highlighted the progress of its streaming business. The company’s executives emphasized that Hulu will become a "global general entertainment brand" by the fall. This shift will see the integration of Hulu into the Disney+ app, offering a unified streaming experience for users around the world.

Disney+ currently features content from Disney, Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars, and National Geographic. In select regions, the service also includes ESPN and Star. As part of the integration process, Disney plans to enhance the technology behind the app, introducing new features and a more personalized homepage. These improvements are expected to culminate in a seamless Disney+ and Hulu experience available to consumers next year.

Despite the integration, reports suggesting a "wind-down" or "phase out" of Hulu as a standalone U.S. service appear to be premature. According to sources familiar with Disney's streaming strategy, standalone Hulu will remain available for customers who prefer not to bundle it with Disney+. This approach ensures that users can still access Hulu's content independently, even as the service becomes more integrated with Disney+.

Hulu has limited brand recognition outside the U.S. and Japan, but some analysts believe it has potential in international markets. Guy Bisson, Executive Director at Ampere Analysis, noted that Hulu could be a stronger brand than Star for global audiences. However, he also pointed out that any U.S. phase-out would need to be gradual, as Hulu still holds value for certain types of content, particularly network-style programming.

The history of Hulu as an international brand dates back to 2009 when it nearly partnered with UK network ITV on a major content deal. Although the deal didn't materialize, Hulu remained a U.S.-only service until 2011, when it launched a version in Japan. That service was later sold to Nippon, highlighting the challenges of expanding beyond the U.S. market.

Interestingly, ITV and Disney+ recently began a content-sharing partnership in the UK, allowing their services to feature content from each other. This collaboration reflects a growing trend of cross-platform partnerships in the streaming industry.

Disney launched Disney+ in 2019, and since then, the service has expanded globally. The Star brand, which was popular in Latin America and Asia, served as the general entertainment tile on Disney+. With the recent changes, Star will now be replaced by Hulu in international markets.

As part of its ongoing efforts to streamline operations, Disney aims to unify its streaming platforms under one tech stack. This move is expected to simplify ad sales and improve the overall user experience.
