IonQ Launches Earnings as Amazon Invests in Quantum Tech

Quantum Computing Stocks Face Key Earnings Reports in Q2
As the second quarter of 2025 draws to a close, quantum computing stocks are under the spotlight as they prepare for earnings reports. These companies continue to operate at a loss, but their focus remains on advancing the technology that could revolutionize computing. Investors are closely watching how these firms perform financially and whether they can demonstrate progress toward commercial viability.
Amazon.com (AMZN) recently announced an investment in IonQ (IONQ), signaling growing interest from major tech players in the quantum computing space. IonQ is set to report its earnings after market close on Wednesday, while D-Wave Quantum (QBTS) will release results earlier on August 7. Rigetti Computing (RGTI) is scheduled to report on August 12, with Quantum Computing (QUBT) expected to follow in mid-August.
IonQ’s Revenue Growth and Analyst Outlook
IonQ is anticipated to report a wider loss of 30 cents per share, compared to 18 cents in the same period last year. However, analysts expect revenue to grow significantly, reaching $17.3 million, up 52% from the previous year. Looking ahead, revenue is projected to hit $25.6 million in the September quarter.
Rosenblatt Securities recently initiated coverage on IonQ with a "buy" rating, expressing confidence in the company's potential to become a leader in the industry. The firm believes IonQ could achieve annualized revenues exceeding $100 million by 2025, nearly doubling in 2026, and potentially reaching $1 billion in the coming years.
D-Wave and Rigetti: Mixed Performance
D-Wave, which turned profitable in the March quarter due to a one-time revenue boost, is expected to report a 5-cent loss in Q2, a slight improvement from a 10-cent loss a year ago. Revenue is forecasted to grow 17% to $2.6 million, with expectations of reaching $3.2 million in the next quarter.
Rigetti, on the other hand, is expected to post a 5-cent loss in Q2, better than a 7-cent loss in the same period last year. However, revenue is predicted to decline by 39% to $1.96 million. Analysts believe sales growth will rebound in the September quarter and accelerate further in early 2026.
Quantum Computing’s Potential and Challenges
Quantum computing operates on a subatomic level, utilizing advanced technologies such as supercooled superconductor chips. It has the potential to solve complex problems that classical computers cannot handle, such as simulating chemical reactions and optimizing material design.
Despite the promise, the industry faces challenges. The pace of commercialization remains uncertain, and investors are divided on when quantum computing will become widely adopted. This uncertainty contributes to the volatility seen in quantum computing stocks this year.
Market Volatility and Investment Strategies
The four publicly traded quantum computing companies have raised over $2.4 billion in 2025 through various funding rounds, with IonQ leading the way in terms of capital raised. The company has also been active in acquisitions, further expanding its capabilities.
Investors are using different strategies to navigate the market, including options trading. A common approach involves buying call options, which allows investors to purchase a stock at a predetermined price without significant risk.
Industry Outlook and Future Prospects
Nvidia (NVDA) has offered differing views on the timeline for quantum computing advancements, highlighting the ongoing debate within the industry. Meanwhile, Bank of America has forecasted key developments between 2030 and 2033.
In 2025, D-Wave stock has surged 118%, while IonQ shares remain flat. Rigetti has gained about 8%, and Quantum Computing has edged up approximately 2%. These movements reflect investor sentiment and the evolving landscape of the quantum computing sector.
As the industry continues to develop, the performance of these companies will be closely watched by investors and analysts alike. The coming quarters will be critical in determining whether quantum computing can transition from a promising technology to a commercially viable solution.
