Upcoming Events in Arcata and Eureka
Whether you're interested in documentaries, birding, cycling, or family-friendly art activities, there are several events happening in Arcata and Eureka this week. Here’s a look at some of the highlights.
Film Screening: "The Trustfall"
Tonight at 7 p.m., the Minor Theatre located at 1001 H St., Arcata, will host a screening of "The Trustfall," a crowd-funded documentary about Julian Assange. The event is being hosted by Pat Kanzler, and tickets are available as a donation ranging from $5 to $15. This R-rated film offers a unique perspective on its subject and is sure to spark conversation.
Guided Marsh Tours
There are multiple opportunities to explore the natural beauty of the Arcata Marsh and Wildlife Sanctuary. On Saturday, the Redwood Region Audubon Society will lead a free guided field trip from 8:30 to 11 a.m. Participants are encouraged to bring binoculars and meet trip leader Tylor Bell-Rogers at the end of South I Street (Klopp Lake) in Arcata. This tour provides a chance to enjoy incredible views of Humboldt Bay, easy-to-walk trails, and a diverse range of birdlife.
Another free tour of the Arcata Marsh and Wildlife Sanctuary will be offered by Friends of the Arcata Marsh on the same day. Meet leader Leslie Anderson at 2 p.m. in the lobby of the Arcata Marsh Interpretive Center on South G Street for a 90-minute walk focused on the importance of wetlands. This event is scheduled rain or shine, so it's a great opportunity to experience the marsh regardless of the weather.
Birding Tour at Humboldt Bay National Wildlife Refuge
On Sunday, the Redwood Region Audubon Society will offer a free guided birding tour at the Humboldt Bay National Wildlife Refuge from 9 to 11 a.m. Meet leader Ralph Bucher at the Visitor Center for a two-mile walk along a wide, flat gravel trail. This refuge offers access to tidally-influenced habitats such as mudflats, riparian vegetation, conifers, and a bay that hosts various geese, raptors, shorebirds, and waders.
Cycling Tour of the Arcata Marsh
Andy Feinstein, a board member of Friends of Arcata Marsh and an experienced cyclist, will lead a “Second Sunday Cycling Tour” of the Arcata Marsh on Sunday. The tour starts at 2 p.m. at the Arcata Marsh Interpretive Center and lasts 90 minutes. It focuses on the “Three Ws of the Marsh”: wetlands, wildlife, and wastewater treatment. Participants are encouraged to bring their own bike or e-Bike and wear a helmet. All ages are welcome, and attendees will receive a free FOAM logo bike bell.
Underground Film Party
For those looking for a different kind of movie experience, Movie Party Tonight will present an underground film party on August 11 at the Savage Henry Comedy Club, 415 Fifth St., Eureka. The featured film is 1974’s “The Street Fighter.” Doors open at 6 p.m., and the movie starts at 7 p.m. Tickets are $10, which includes a raffle ticket. This event is intended for mature audiences.
“Mini Masters” Art Workshop
The Humboldt Arts Council will host its “Mini Masters” program on August 17 at the Morris Graves Museum of Art, 636 F St., Eureka. This monthly event is always free and invites families to participate together in an art-making workshop that complements the month’s story-time book. Projects are geared toward children ages 2 to 5 years, but all children are welcome. On August 17, participants will learn how every mistake is an opportunity to make something beautiful, inspired by the book “Beautiful Oops” by Barney Saltzberg.
After the workshop, parents and children are invited to visit the art activity stations together to create their own mistake-informed masterpieces with guidance from art educator Genevieve Kjesbu. Attendees can take home their very own copy of “Beautiful Oops.”
