Samantha Boss, a mother of four and a divorce mediator, shared her idea on TikTok, suggesting that taking these photos over the summer or on a weekend might be the easiest and most efficient way to capture the perfect shot.

Boss explains that many children feel self-conscious when posing in front of a crowd, especially during the first day of school. This is particularly true for kids from divorced households, where one parent may not be present for the initial day. By shifting the photo session to a weekend, parents can avoid the pressure of the school environment and create a more relaxed atmosphere for their children.

“Take your kids to the elementary school this weekend,” Boss said in her video. “Pack them all up with their book bag, their lunchbox, cute little back-to-school outfit, their new shoes — all the works — and go take a tripod to that elementary school, junior high, high school ... and go take the back-to-school pictures on the weekends.”

This method not only eases the tension of the first day but also helps reduce stress for kids who are already excited, nervous, or overwhelmed. Boss noted that by capturing the photos ahead of time, families can avoid the chaos that often accompanies the first day of school.

For those in high-conflict co-parenting situations, this strategy can be especially beneficial. Boss suggested that if one parent is responsible for the kids on a particular day, they can take the photos without the other parent needing to be present. This eliminates the stress associated with trying to coordinate both parents’ schedules for the first day.

If it’s not possible to take the photos before classes start, Boss recommends a weekend photo shoot on school grounds, provided the campus is open. She emphasized that no one will likely notice the difference later. “When your kid is 40, looking at pictures from their childhood, they are not going to go, ‘Did you take this when school started?’ They’re not going to know it wasn’t that day.”

As a former teacher, Boss understands the challenges of balancing work and family life. She recalls missing her children’s first days of school due to her job. “I had to be at work early,” she said. “I tried to take selfies on the front porch at 6 a.m. and my kids were all squinty-eyed and not awake. They said, ‘Mom, we haven’t eaten breakfast yet!’ and I was hollering, ‘Have a great day!’”

In addition to her main tip, Boss offered another piece of advice: “Moms, get in the photo!” She noted that many mothers tend to stay behind the camera instead of being part of the picture. “So many moms are behind the camera. Get in front of it!”
