New Costco Location in Florida Set to Open

A new Costco location is set to open in Florida, marking one of several expansions the warehouse chain has planned. Known for its wide range of products, from snacks and baked goods to fresh produce, meats, cheese, eyeglasses, hearing aids, prescriptions, gasoline, tires, and even cars, this new store will be a significant addition to the community.

The grand opening is scheduled for August 6 in The Villages, a large adult community in the United States. This location is part of Costco’s ongoing strategy to open 25-30 new stores annually, with an equal split between the U.S. and other global markets. Other openings in August include new locations in Texas, Nevada, Washington, Quebec, Ontario, and Mexico.

Despite the excitement surrounding the opening, there won’t be any traditional festivities. The doors will open at 8 a.m., and shopping will begin immediately. A Costco spokesperson mentioned that while the event is always exciting and busy, the ribbon-cutting ceremony will be brief and efficient.

Location Details

The new Costco in The Villages will be located at 675 Tatonka Terrace in the Buffalo Ridge Shopping Plaza, next to County Road 466. The store will span 162,000 square feet, including a 2,000-square-foot liquor store. It will also feature 700 parking spaces and a gas station with 32 fuel pumps.

The Villages, recognized as the largest adult community in the United States, spans across Sumter, Lake, and Marion counties, covering six ZIP codes. According to recent U.S. Census data, it was named the nation's fastest-growing metro area and the safest place to live in Florida.

Opening Hours and Membership Information

The store will open at 8 a.m. on August 6. Regular hours will be:

  • Monday – Friday: 9 a.m. – 10 a.m.
  • Saturday: 9 a.m. – 9:30 a.m.
  • Sunday: 9 a.m. – 10 a.m.

Executive members can shop an hour earlier on weekday and Sunday mornings and an extra half-hour earlier on Saturdays.

To shop at Costco, you typically need a membership. There are two levels:

  • Gold Star membership: $65 a year, includes two cards for you and someone in your household
  • Executive membership: $130 a year, includes two membership cards, 2% back on eligible purchases (up to $1,250), discounts on select services, and now early entry and a monthly $10 credit for orders of $150 placed through the company's "Same-Day" service or Instacart

Business memberships are available for the same prices, with the option of allowing buyers to purchase for resale and add additional people to the account for $65 each.

New members signing up for the first time or those whose memberships have been expired for at least 18 months will receive a membership incentive. The offer will be available on the website before the opening, though no specific timeframe has been announced.

Memberships are not required to buy Costco Pharmacy prescriptions online or in-store; non-members can get eye exams but can't buy glasses or contacts. Anyone can shop at costco.com, but there is a 5% surcharge for non-members, and some items are limited to members only. You can also shop without a membership if you have a Shop Card, a prepaid Costco gift card which must be purchased by a member.

Additional Retail News

While Costco is expanding, other discount retailers are also making their mark. Aldi, known for its no-frills approach, is rapidly growing in Florida. Two new locations opened on July 31 in Port Orange and St. Cloud, and more grand openings are planned for August 14 in Bushnell, Jacksonville, Lehigh Acres, and Tampa.

As of August 1, there are 35 Costco locations in Florida, including the new one in The Villages. The last new location opened in Stuart in April, and another is reportedly coming to Sanford. Discussions are also underway for potential spots in Port St. Lucie, Pensacola, and Miami.
