Plus-Size Male Model Struts the Runway, Promotes Body Positivity in KC Fashion

A Journey of Authenticity and Empowerment
Jorge Fuller has spent much of his adult life in front of an audience, whether teaching in a classroom or performing poetry on stage. But it's his work as a plus-size male model that has pushed him into an even more visible and challenging role. Over the past four years, Fuller has made a name for himself in Kansas City's modeling scene, emerging as a powerful advocate for body positivity and self-expression. He says that as a plus-size Black man on the runway, he's not just walking for himself, he's walking for the students and community members who never imagined they could.
His presence challenges traditional beauty standards and opens doors for others to step confidently into the spotlight. Whether he is working with designers to craft runway-ready outfits or sharing wisdom during rehearsals, Fuller brings the same energy: uplifting others through unapologetic authenticity.
For Fuller, modeling isn't about fitting in, it's about making room, and inspiring others. He recently sat down with J.M. Banks, the Star's culture and identity reporter, and talked about his journey as a model, poet, and teacher in Kansas City.
Background and Upbringing
Fuller is a Kansas City native, raised in the urban core, particularly on the east side of Troost. He attended Southeast High School and graduated in 2006. Throughout his early years, he was involved in the performing arts, including debate and ROTC. While he participated in sports, he didn’t focus much on athletic programs.
He always felt drawn to being on stage, even if he wasn’t the main character. This passion led him to the University of Missouri-Kansas City, where he studied business, elementary education, and completed a liberal arts degree. In all these spaces, he focused on giving back to his community, learning, and building bridges.
As he started his teaching career, he worked with Jumpstart KC, a college readiness program in Kansas City. For the last 19 years, he has been in education. However, he noticed that his artistic side wasn’t getting enough attention. So, he returned to his love of poetry, which he had started in middle school and continued through high school at Southeast.
Later in life, he wanted to explore something beyond education, community, or business. That’s when he discovered modeling.
The First Fashion Show and Inspiration
Fuller got into modeling because he wanted to test himself and see what would happen. He was picked up for the Curves & Confidence Fashion show, which gave him a space to be out there. He was able to walk in an official fashion show, and from there, he did many other shows, castings, and found a small community within that space.
The Curves & Confidence Fashion Show is a platform for plus-size models. It started primarily for plus-size women but now includes all sizes. The event helps participants learn how to model, build confidence, and get accustomed to the fashion industry.
For Fuller, being a plus-size male model was a new experience. He found a sense of confidence by simply walking, posing, and smiling. He realized that Black men often don’t get to showcase their joy in such spaces. He also saw the importance of representation in clothing and fashion.
The Power of Body Positivity
To Fuller, body positivity means being able to smile and express joy without fear. It’s about seeing someone own their story without worrying about others’ opinions. He believes that showing vulnerability can be a form of strength, and it’s something we don’t often see.
He emphasizes that body positivity in the fashion industry is about being yourself and helping others see that they can be themselves too. As a Black male model, he hopes to inspire others to embrace their uniqueness and feel confident in their own skin.
Kansas City’s Fashion Scene
Fuller believes that the Kansas City fashion scene is ready and receptive to plus-size Black male models. He thinks that if more plus-size Black men came out to castings, there would be a significant increase in opportunities for them. He even dreams of opening his own store, as he believes there is a market that isn’t being tapped into.
While there are plus-size stores, they often don’t focus on creating a full fashion experience that makes people feel good from head to toe.
Challenges and Pushback
There have been moments when Fuller passed casting but wasn’t picked up by a designer. These experiences highlight the gap that still exists in the industry, as most designers don’t create clothes for plus-size men, especially Black men who want a specific look.
Despite these challenges, he continues to push forward, believing that eventually, someone will create a space for him.
Encouragement for Others
For those hesitant to try something outside their comfort zone, Fuller encourages them to take the opportunity. He believes that going to castings, rehearsals, and trying out can lead to unexpected opportunities. Even if it’s not for everyone, it’s worth exploring.
He also emphasizes the power of creativity, artistry, and the impact one can have on others. Whether it’s modeling, photography, or organizing events, starting somewhere can lead to meaningful connections and growth.
Future Plans
Fuller is excited for upcoming events like Curves and Confidence 12 and the 18th and Vine Art Showcase. He looks forward to showcasing himself, meeting designers, and connecting with educators, poets, and community members.
These events give him a chance to be part of something bigger and highlight Kansas City in a phenomenal way.
