A Heartwarming Rescue Story: Meet Herman

Great Dog Rescue New England (GDRNE) is a dedicated foster-based dog rescue organization based in Massachusetts. Their mission is to provide care and support for dogs in need, often placing them in nurturing foster homes until they find their forever families. Recently, GDRNE has been working with an adorable puppy named Herman, an almost 5-month-old Australian Cattle Dog and Basenji mix who was rescued from difficult circumstances.

Herman's story began when he was found living as a stray, reportedly abandoned at a local dump. At the time, he was scavenging for food and struggling to survive. Fortunately, GDRNE was able to intervene, and Herman was taken into their care. He was placed with a foster family who have since helped him learn what it means to be loved and cared for by humans.

According to his foster family, Herman’s rescue story is particularly touching. They shared that he was found at a dump in rural Mississippi with a "collar" made out of shoestrings. When rescuers arrived, Herman immediately recognized his chance for safety. He ran from behind a dumpster and eagerly jumped into the rescuer's car. His foster family described how, despite being scared, he was incredibly happy and didn’t want to miss his opportunity to be rescued.

Despite his challenging beginnings, Herman has shown remarkable resilience and a sweet disposition. He is about 25 pounds and has proven to be exceptionally sociable, forming positive relationships with everyone he meets—including dogs, people, children, and even cats. He is also known for his affectionate nature, often leaning into his human companions for full-body cuddles. Additionally, Herman loves playing in water, which makes him a joy to be around.

GDRNE is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that operates without a physical shelter. Instead, all of their rescue dogs are placed in foster homes where they can receive individualized care and attention. The organization is made up of volunteers throughout New England who are passionate about helping dogs escape homelessness. Their reach extends beyond Massachusetts, as they rescue dogs from shelters in the South and bring them to New England for adoption.

As a nonprofit, GDRNE relies entirely on donations and the efforts of volunteers. Their goal is to meet the unique needs of each dog and ensure they are placed in loving, permanent homes. To further this mission, the organization donates money to spay and neuter clinics in the South, engages in community outreach, and partners with agencies that train dogs to assist individuals with disabilities.

If you're interested in adopting one of GDRNE's loving rescues, there are specific requirements. Anyone interested must begin the adoption process by filling out an application. Adopters must be at least 24 years old and live in New England, New York, New Jersey, or Pennsylvania. It's important to note that GDRNE does not place dogs as emotional support animals or service/guide dogs.
