School Uniform Pop-Up Shop Proves a Hit

A Community Effort to Support Families and the Environment
In response to the growing cost of living crisis, Spinning Gate Shopping Centre has taken a proactive approach to support local families by partnering with The Uniformity Project. This collaboration resulted in a pop-up shop event held on Thursday, 31 July, from 11 am to 3 pm. During this time, families had the opportunity to collect free school uniforms—both new and recycled—ensuring they were well-prepared for the upcoming school term.
The Uniformity Project is an initiative focused on sustainability and affordability. By recycling used school uniforms, the project offers a cost-effective solution for parents while also promoting environmental responsibility. The goal is to reduce the number of school uniforms that end up in landfills by reusing and renewing them. This not only helps families save money but also contributes to a healthier planet.
The Uniformity Project serves a wide range of primary and secondary schools in the local area, including those in Leigh, Ashton-in-Makerfield, Atherton, Golborne, Lowton, and Tyldesley. The pop-up shop provided generic uniforms that could be used across various schools, making it easier for families to find what they needed.
This initiative builds on the success of the school uniform donation point located within Spinning Gate Shopping Centre. This convenient drop-off location allows residents to donate gently used school uniforms, which are then sent to The Uniformity Project at Spinners Mill, on the fifth floor. The donation station is an essential part of the program, ensuring that more children can benefit from free school uniforms.
How to Donate School Uniforms
Donating school uniforms is a simple process. All types of school clothing are accepted, including jumpers, skirts, blazers, cardigans, ties, PE kits, trousers, and shirts. However, it is important to ensure that all items are freshly washed before donating. This helps maintain the quality of the uniforms and makes them more appealing to other families.
To make the process even easier, families can drop off their donations at the recycling station located near Costa Coffee within Spinning Gate Shopping Centre. Once collected, these items are forwarded to The Uniformity Project for reuse by other families. This system ensures that every donated item finds a new home, reducing waste and supporting the community.
Community Response and Future Plans
Karen Cox, the Centre Manager of Spinning Gate Shopping Centre, expressed her enthusiasm for the partnership with The Uniformity Project. She highlighted the positive impact of the pop-up shop, noting that many families took advantage of the opportunity to collect free uniforms.
“We are delighted to continue our partnership with The Uniformity Project by providing a town centre location within Leigh for free school uniform to be collected by families,” she said. “It was great to see so many families join us in the centre to benefit from the pop-up shop.”
Cox also encouraged shoppers to consider recycling their child’s old school uniform. “Simply donate freshly washed uniform into our recycling station outside Costa Coffee & we shall ensure all uniform received is forwarded to The Uniformity Project. Many thanks to the hundreds of families who have donated uniform to the scheme so far.”
Kerry Bamber, Service Lead for The Uniformity Project, praised the event as a success. “The school uniform pop-up shop held recently at Spinning Gate Shopping Centre was brilliant for raising awareness of our project. Following the pop-up shop, we have had queues of families join us at The Uniformity Project, which is brilliant!”
Bamber added that the project is open to everyone and encourages families to visit the fifth floor of Spinners Mill to collect uniforms for their children.
