Starbucks Announces Closures of Mobile-Order and Pick-Up-Only Stores

Starbucks has recently announced plans to close up to 90 mobile-order and pick-up-only store locations across 23 U.S. states in fiscal year 2026. This move is part of the company’s broader "Back to Starbucks" business model, which emphasizes meaningful customer interactions over streamlined service. The decision reflects a shift in strategy aimed at redefining the brand experience by prioritizing human connection.

Not all mobile-order and pick-up-only locations will be closing. Some of these stores are expected to be converted into traditional coffeehouses with seating areas, offering a more conventional Starbucks environment. However, the exact locations that will undergo this transformation have not yet been disclosed.

Why Are These Stores Closing?

Since September 2024, Starbucks has been working on its "Back to Starbucks" model, which focuses on enhancing worker and customer interaction. The goal is to create a more personable and engaging customer experience. During a recent quarterly earnings call on July 29, Starbucks’ Chairman and CEO, Brian Niccol, explained that the mobile-order and pick-up-only format was overly transactional and lacked the warmth and human connection that defines the brand.

Niccol emphasized that the company aims to deliver drinks in four minutes or less while still maintaining meaningful interactions. This new approach seeks to balance efficiency with a more personalized touch, ensuring customers feel valued and connected to the brand.

History of Pick-Up Only Locations

Pick-up only locations began appearing in 2019 as a way to reduce wait times for customers. However, Niccol believes that the "Back to Starbucks" model can achieve both reduced wait times and deeper customer engagement. This shift marks a significant change in how Starbucks operates, moving away from a purely convenience-driven model to one that values personal connections.

Which Stores Are Being Closed?

The closures are expected to impact up to 90 stores nationwide, with California, Illinois, New York, and Texas seeing the most significant number of affected locations. Other states, including Arizona, Colorado, Connecticut, Georgia, Hawaii, Florida, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, and Washington, are also set to be affected.
