Temple ISD Board Honored as Top School Board by Texas Association

Recognition of Excellence in Education
The Temple Independent School District (TISD) Board of Trustees has been honored as an Honor School Board by the Texas Association of School Administrators (TASA) as part of the organization’s 2025 School Board Awards. This recognition highlights the district’s dedication and service to public education, making it one of only five districts in Texas to receive this prestigious award.
The selection process for the Honor Boards was conducted by a committee of school superintendents across Texas. The evaluation criteria included support for educational performance, investment in improvement projects, commitment to ethical governance, and the maintenance of positive relationships among board members. This rigorous process ensures that only the most outstanding school boards are acknowledged for their contributions to student success.
In addition to TISD, the other districts recognized as Honor Boards are Colorado ISD, Galena Park ISD, Memphis ISD, and Plano ISD. These schools have all demonstrated a strong commitment to excellence in education and community engagement.
Leadership and Impact
TASA praised the Temple ISD Board of Trustees for its focus on data-informed leadership, student-centered priorities, ethical governance, and active community involvement. Dr. Bobby Ott, the superintendent of Temple ISD, emphasized the board’s role in unifying the community through thoughtful decision-making. He noted that the board's diverse perspectives and mutual respect have contributed significantly to the progress made over the past 36 months.
"The progress made in the last 36 months is directly tied to the leadership, direction and support of this School Board," said Dr. Ott. "This is a Board of diverse perspectives, varying backgrounds and mutual respect for one another, with a singular focus on doing what is right for all students and staff of Temple ISD."
Structure and Representation
The TISD Board of Trustees consists of seven members, each representing a specific district. The current members include:
- Dan Posey – President (District 3)
- Ronnie Gaines – Vice President (District 4)
- Virginia Suarez – Secretary (District 1)
- Bre’Layshia Alexander (District 2)
- Dawn Cook (District 5)
- Shannon Gowan (District 6)
- Shannon Myers (District 7)
Each trustee serves a three-year term, ensuring equitable representation for all neighborhoods, businesses, and families within the district. This structure fosters a balanced approach to decision-making and community engagement.
Regional and Statewide Recognition
In addition to the state honor, the TISD School Board was recently named Region 12 School Board of the Year. This achievement makes them a regional nominee for the Outstanding School Board award. Dan Posey, the board president, expressed pride in the recognition, highlighting the board's shared commitment to the well-being of students, families, and staff.
“Our Board is composed of unique individuals with different backgrounds, but we all serve on the Board for one reason – doing what is best for our students, families and staff members,” Posey stated. “Once we reach a Board decision, we stand by it and the administration. The needs of our students and TISD personnel always come first for our Board members and our superintendent.”
Final Steps for the Highest Honor
As finalists for the 2025 Outstanding School Board award, the five Honor Boards will be interviewed at txEDCON25, the TASA/TASB State Convention in Houston. The winner will be announced on September 13. This final step underscores the significance of the recognition and the high standards set by TASA for school board excellence.
