The Challenges of Midlife and the Power of Community

As women, we face a multitude of challenges that seem to multiply as we age. From battling misogyny and inequality to dealing with attacks on our bodies and choices, we navigate a world that often feels chaotic and unpredictable. Now, as we enter midlife, new layers of complexity are added: ageism, shifting relevance, and fresh waves of competition. We're constantly told to "reinvent," "up-skill," and "age gracefully," which can create tension between embracing change and maintaining our sense of self.

While the idea of reinvention offers exciting possibilities, it also brings significant pressure. More importantly, we rarely hear the truth: we simply can't do it alone. This realization makes community more essential than ever before.

In today's post-pandemic, highly remote world, loneliness has become a public health crisis. Chronic loneliness during midlife is strongly linked to depression, weakened immunity, higher risk of stroke and dementia, and an overall lower quality of life—comparable to serious health threats. If this isn't alarming enough, what is?

Many of these changes are natural, though not always enjoyable. As we age, our social circles tend to shrink, partly because we prioritize quality over quantity in relationships. Time becomes scarce, and the convenience of digital communication—texts, emojis, DMs, and voice notes—can make maintaining deep connections difficult. This challenge is even greater when careers evolve and we chase new chapters in life.

So, what should we do? Most of us won’t retire in our 60s, so how do we approach the decades ahead? We’re living longer, facing rising costs, and navigating a world that grows more complex daily. Despite being experienced, valuable, and driven, the fear and exhaustion are real.

One advantage of midlife that often goes unnoticed is the power of true community. A simple "stronger together" mentality is both the spark and the reason why community matters now more than ever. This belief led me to create THE BOARD in 2021. What began as a small group of like-minded peers during the pandemic—driven by the need to support each other—has grown into a community of over 250 paid members who share knowledge, resources, networks, and opportunities.

At its core, THE BOARD serves as a bridge, connecting members to each other, their networks, and clients who benefit from our collective expertise. As many of us build independent practices or new companies, it’s natural to create a shared space where everyone can contribute and benefit.

In an era of information overload, there's simply too much to process, and no one has a clear roadmap. Platforms update weekly, and new tools launch daily. The smartest move isn’t to try harder, but to find or build a community that helps you filter, focus, and adapt. When you gather the right people, you gain direction, authentic support, insights, and the relief of knowing you're not alone.

Community comes in many forms, and you likely need more than one. For me, it includes a mom group text that shares deadlines, events, and cheesy memes, along with neighborhood watch threads, friends forever group chats, hiking squads, and various Substacks. It also includes dedicated Slack channels, private Discord groups, and endless Reddit threads. Community is everywhere—within your zip code, on your laptop screen, and tucked in your back pocket. The key is finding the ones that truly work for you or creating the one you feel is missing.

True community acts as a collective safety net, offering a sounding board, comic relief, and group therapy all in one. As roles and ambitions shift, community reminds you of who you are. It keeps you grounded when you show up intentionally, because real community is never a one-way conversation. It thrives when it grows alongside others navigating similar challenges.

Here’s your homework: as a woman in midlife, or approaching it, create the community you need. Curate the group text, organize the dinner, write the mission statement, or join an established community.

There are several powerful communities designed for women at this stage of life. The What Alliance is ideal for those seeking to forge powerful alliances. The Upside is an incredible place to elevate your consulting knowledge. Luminary is a global professional education and networking platform addressing systemic challenges across industries. And don’t forget to check out THE BOARD.

There are so many powerful communities available for women at this stage of career and life. Wherever you choose to invest your time, make a promise to stay in the circle—or create a new one. It’s how we keep moving forward together, especially on days when it feels impossible to move at all.
