Embrace Your Personality in Dorm Room Decor

August can mean different things to different people. For some, it marks the end of summer; for others, it's the start of a new school year and a return to campus life. Even though our college days may be behind us, we all remember the basic, not-so-stylish dorm decor that was standard back then: Warhol-style posters of Audrey Hepburn, frayed comforters, and glossy faux-wood furniture. While you might not be able to completely replace your school-issued furniture (and maybe you’re not even allowed to), there are plenty of creative ways to elevate it and make your space feel more like a stylish studio apartment.

Pull From Personality

When Jeana Bartroff, who dabbles in interior design as a hobby, moved her daughter into her first college dorm room, she wanted to ensure that it reflected her daughter’s personality. “She wanted color and pattern like she had seen in Copenhagen the winter before,” Bartroff explains. “She’s a happy yet quirky person, so my goal was to communicate that through the design.”

Bartroff achieved this by incorporating vintage pieces. “By adding vintage pieces (nothing too precious), mixing pattern and texture, and staying away from all things plastic, we created a dorm that felt like a slice of home for her.” The key to this unique look was being open to finding inspiration in unexpected places. “I wouldn’t say we invested in art, but we did find a cute, old, mid-20th-century Doris Day movie poster on Etsy, and we used the colors in the poster as a starting point.”

Establish a Color Palette

Dorm rooms offer a blank canvas, giving you the freedom to infuse your personal style into the space. One of the easiest ways to do this is by choosing a color palette. “Design is something I've always been very passionate about, so when it came to decorating my dorm room, I knew that I wanted a space that could feel like home,” says Blair Morrow, a student at LSU studying interior design. “With the chaos of college life, it is important to have a place to relax and recharge. The color palette I chose of blues and greens helps capture a sense of serenity and peace, which was the goal for this space.”

Add Framed Art

Los Angeles-based designer Olivia Erwin Rosenthal is a big fan of incorporating sophisticated elements into a dorm room—namely art. “Posters taped to the wall scream 'freshman year,'” she says. “Even affordable prints in simple frames add instant polish. You can use Command hooks to hang them.”

Install Peel-and-Stick Wallpaper

Covering your dorm’s blank walls with gorgeous peel-and-stick wallpaper can instantly elevate the entire aesthetic. Plus, you can easily remove it at the end of the semester. Just make sure your school’s dorm rules allow it.

“A bold print can completely transform even the most standard dorm walls,” says Elizabeth Martin, founder of Sullivan and Phenix. “Dorm rooms are notoriously bland and boxy, and wallpaper is one of the fastest ways to bring in character, color, and pattern without adding clutter. Peel-and-stick wallpaper is renter-friendly and easy to remove at the end of the year, making it the perfect low-commitment, high-impact design choice.” She's not wrong!

Tips for a Stylish Dorm Space

  • Mix and match textures to create depth and interest.
  • Use lighting strategically to enhance the mood of the room.
  • Incorporate personal items such as books, photos, or souvenirs to make the space uniquely yours.
  • Opt for multifunctional furniture that maximizes limited space.
  • Add plants to bring life and freshness into the room.

By following these tips and drawing inspiration from your own personality, you can transform even the most basic dorm room into a chic, comfortable, and expressive living space.
