Trump Warns 50% Tariffs on India Over Russia and BRICS Ties

U.S. Imposes Additional Tariffs on Indian Imports in Response to Trade with Russia
The United States has announced an additional 25% tariff on imports from India, increasing the total tariff rate to 50%. This move is a direct response to India’s continued trade relationship with Russia, particularly its purchase of oil from the country. The decision was made through an executive order signed on Wednesday morning.
India has been given 21 days to respond to the potential tariffs before they take effect. These new tariffs will be added to the existing 25% tariff that was previously imposed by former President Donald Trump as a "penalty" for India's trade ties with Russia.
In a recent social media post, Trump stated that India had "always bought a vast majority of their military equipment from Russia, and are Russia’s largest buyer of energy." He also expressed indifference toward India’s actions, saying, “I don’t care what India does with Russia. They can take their dead economies down together, for all I care.”
Trump had hinted at the possibility of new tariffs earlier in the week, telling CNBC that India was “fueling the war machine” against Ukraine. The U.S. administration argues that these measures are meant to pressure India to reconsider its trade policies with Russia, especially in light of the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
India has strongly criticized the move, arguing that it is being unfairly targeted for its trade relationships. In a statement released on Wednesday, the Ministry of External Affairs emphasized that India’s imports are based on market factors and aimed at ensuring the energy security of its 1.4 billion citizens. The statement further condemned the U.S. actions as "unfair, unjustified, and unreasonable," and pledged that India would take necessary steps to protect its national interests.
This development comes amid a broader breakdown in U.S.-India trade negotiations, which collapsed over disagreements regarding the opening of India’s agriculture and dairy sectors. The tensions have escalated as both countries struggle to find common ground on trade policy.
On Thursday, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the issue indirectly, stating that he would not compromise the interests of the country’s farmers, even if it came at a high cost. While he did not directly mention the U.S. tariffs or trade talks, his comments signaled a firm stance on protecting domestic agricultural interests.
Trump has also been critical of India’s involvement in the Brics trading bloc, which includes Brazil, Russia, China, and India. He has labeled the group as "anti the United States" and has sought to isolate it through various economic measures.
In 2024, Indian imports into the U.S. were valued at approximately $129 billion. With the new tariffs, India now faces the highest tariff rates alongside Brazil, which also has 50% tariffs due to the arrest of its former president, Jair Bolsonaro, a Trump ally. A series of Trump’s "reciprocal" tariffs are set to take effect this Friday, including a 50% tariff on Brazil, a 35% tariff on Canada, and a 25% tariff on Mexico.
In addition to the trade issues, Trump has focused on ending Russia’s war in Ukraine. He has set a 10-day deadline for Russia to reach a peace deal with Ukraine, with the deadline falling on Friday. To facilitate discussions, U.S. special envoy Steve Witkoff visited Moscow on Wednesday for talks with the Kremlin. Trump claimed "great progress was made" during the three-hour meeting.
When asked about the consequences if Russia fails to meet the deadline, Trump said, “Well, there will be sanctions, but they seem to be pretty good at avoiding sanctions.” This statement highlights the ongoing challenges in applying pressure on Russia through economic means.
As the situation continues to evolve, the implications of these tariffs and trade policies could significantly impact U.S.-India relations and global trade dynamics.
