Bucks IU Launches New Programs at Pearl S. Buck

New Educational Programs at Pearl S. Buck Elementary School

In response to the increasing need for specialized student services, the Bucks County Intermediate Unit (Bucks IU) has officially launched new programs at the former Pearl S. Buck Elementary School on Top Road in Levittown. This initiative marks a significant step in addressing the diverse educational needs of students across the region.

The newly established facility now hosts 18 special education classrooms operated by the Bucks IU. These classrooms cater to students from kindergarten through eighth grade and are specifically designed to support those requiring emotional or autistic assistance. Each classroom is tailored to meet the unique requirements outlined in the students' Individualized Education Programs (IEPs), ensuring that the curriculum aligns with their specific educational goals.

Dr. Lenny Greaney, Assistant to the Executive Director at Bucks IU, emphasized the importance of this expansion. “The opening of the Bucks IU at Pearl S. Buck provides a meaningful opportunity to meet the requests of our member districts. An educational environment such as this allows our highly skilled and trained staff to meet the complex and individualized needs of students enrolled at the school.”

Structured Learning Environments

The school features three distinct "pods" of classrooms, each designed to foster a supportive and focused learning atmosphere. In addition to these specialized areas, there are shared spaces that include specialized learning zones and general workspaces for staff. This layout ensures that both students and educators have access to the resources they need to thrive.

Mark McCloskey, Assistant Principal, and Dr. Janean Ciancia, Principal, welcomed students at the school’s entrance, creating a sense of familiarity and comfort for incoming learners. The arrival process is carefully coordinated to ensure that students are met by familiar Bucks IU staff members who then assist them in transitioning from their transportation to their respective classrooms.

Fostering Social-Emotional Development

The classrooms are not only focused on academic instruction but also on social-emotional growth. For instance, in one classroom led by Kalene Kulan and Matthew Burst, students engage in discussions about understanding personal preferences and emotions. These activities are essential in helping students develop self-awareness and interpersonal skills.

Outside the classroom, students enjoy time on the playground, where they can interact with peers and participate in physical activities. These moments of play are vital for building social connections and promoting overall well-being.

Expanding Educational Opportunities

In addition to the programs at Pearl S. Buck, the Bucks IU at Samuel Everitt, also located in Levittown, serves students in ninth grade through age 22. By offering specialized programs at both locations, the Bucks IU provides a comprehensive continuum of education that mirrors traditional school structures. This approach ensures that students receive consistent support throughout their academic journey.

Jen Schmidt, Program Director–School-Age Programs at Bucks IU, highlighted the benefits of this model. “The Bucks IU at Pearl S. Buck provides a supportive environment with individualized instruction to meet the academic, behavioral, sensory, and social-emotional needs of each student while supporting their dignity and independence.”

Commitment to Community Growth

Dr. Mark Hoffman, Executive Director of Bucks IU, explained that expanding programming in Bucks County aligns with the organization's mission to support all learners, their families, school districts, and the broader community. “As the needs of our stakeholders change, the Bucks IU will continue to evolve and grow,” he said.

The Bucks IU plays a crucial role in enhancing student learning by providing educational programs, innovative professional development, and advanced business and technology services. It serves individuals from newborns to adults, including students in public and private schools, along with their staff and administrators. Additionally, the Bucks IU acts as a liaison between local schools and the Pennsylvania Department of Education.
