A Comprehensive Look at the AirPods Pro 3: Comfort, Utility, and Fitness Tracking

For someone whose life revolves around movement—whether it's daily gym sessions, long work commutes, stroller walks, or airport travel—the right earbuds are essential. I’ve been using AirPods Pro since the very first model because they offer reliability and seamless integration with the Apple ecosystem. Now, with the release of the AirPods Pro 3, I've been testing them nonstop for several days ahead of their official launch date.

Apple has positioned the Pro 3 as a significant step forward in its fitness ecosystem. According to Julz Arney, senior director of fitness technologies at Apple, this is "the biggest expansion of our fitness ecosystem ever," allowing users to track workouts and view personal metrics in real time without needing an Apple Watch.

I tested the Pro 3 across various scenarios: a cross-country flight, strength training sessions, a walk with my daughter, phone calls, and even a conversation with a foreign language speaker. Here’s my honest assessment of how the Pro 3 performs in comfort, utility, and fitness tracking—and whether they’re worth the investment for your lifestyle.

In-Ear Heart Rate Tracking: A Game-Changer for Fitness Enthusiasts

One standout feature for data lovers is the in-ear heart rate tracking. As someone who values workout tracking, I often feel frustrated when I forget my Apple Watch. The Pro 3’s ability to track heart rate and calorie burn without a wrist-worn device is a game-changer.

During a heavy strength workout, I intentionally left my watch at home to see how the earbuds would perform. The Pro 3 captured heart rate and calorie data accurately, matching what I’d expect from my Apple Watch and Oura ring. No special features were needed—just connecting via Bluetooth and selecting the workout type in the Fitness app. This made me treat the session just like any other tracked workout, which is crucial for assessing recovery and planning future sessions.

Sound Quality and Listening Experience

The sound quality on the Pro 3 is top-notch. While I don’t need audiophile-level gear, the improvement over the Pro 2 is noticeable. Active noise cancellation (ANC) is stronger and cleaner, making it easier to focus on music or podcasts during commutes. Transparency mode also works well, allowing me to hear ambient sounds while still enjoying my audio.

A back-to-back listening test with the Pro 2 showed a clear difference. The Pro 3 offers more depth and separation, especially for spoken-word content like interviews and podcasts. During a recent flight, the ANC created a cinematic experience, making dialogue crisp and background scores layered.

Improved Fit, but Not Perfect

The fit of the Pro 3 is better than the Pro 2, though not entirely flawless. The redesigned shape and wider range of tip sizes make them more secure during high-impact workouts. However, some movements—like kettlebell swings or high plank positions—still cause one bud to fall out occasionally. Using different tip sizes for each ear helped improve stability, but those with highly active lifestyles might still prefer sport-specific earbuds.

Live Translation: A Useful Tool for Travelers

Live Translation is another notable feature. Testing it with a native Portuguese speaker was straightforward, though there were minor delays and some overlap between original and translated audio. It requires preparation, such as setting the Translate app to the correct language beforehand. Despite these quirks, it could be a valuable tool for navigating language barriers during travel.

Should You Upgrade to the AirPods Pro 3?

If you value high-quality ANC, improved sound, and built-in fitness tracking without needing an Apple Watch, the Pro 3 is worth considering. They also offer Pro hearing-aid features and access to iOS 26 capabilities like Live Translation.

However, if your current AirPods work well and you don’t need the additional features, there’s no urgent need to upgrade. For me, the Pro 3 have become my go-to earbuds for both daily use and workouts, offering better stability and sound quality than the Pro 2.
