Jody Gerson Joins Gap Inc. Board from Universal Music

Strategic Expansion and Cultural Integration at Gap Inc.
Gap Inc. continues to expand its influence in the fashion industry by reinforcing its commitment to integrating fashion with culture. Recently, the company added Jody Gerson, chairman and chief executive officer of Universal Music Publishing Group (UMPG), to its board of directors. This move marks a significant step in Gap's ongoing efforts to blend style with cultural storytelling.
With the addition of Gerson, the size of Gap’s board has increased to 12 members. Gerson is not only the first female CEO of a major music publisher but also the first woman to chair a global music company. Since joining UMPG in 2015, she has played a pivotal role in signing influential artists such as Adele, Harry Styles, Kendrick Lamar, SZA, and Coldplay. Additionally, she has overseen key acquisitions, including the catalogs of Bob Dylan, Neil Diamond, and Sting.
Gerson’s involvement extends beyond her professional roles. She serves on several boards, including the USC Annenberg Inclusion Initiative, the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, Ancestry.com, Project Healthy Minds, and the National Music Publishers Association. She is also a cofounder of the nonprofit She Is the Music, which advocates for gender equality in the music industry.
Vision and Leadership at Gap Inc.
Richard Dickson, president and CEO of Gap Inc., praised Gerson’s contributions, stating that she is “a cultural force in her own right.” He emphasized that her insights into “fashion-tainment”—Gap’s platform at the intersection of fashion, music, and celebrity—are unmatched. Dickson highlighted that Gap Inc. believes style is a form of storytelling, and Gerson’s ability to amplify voices and shape cultural moments will be invaluable as the company redefines itself as an iconic, purpose-led house of brands.
Mayo A. Shattuck 3rd, chair of the Gap Inc. board, echoed these sentiments, noting that Gerson’s ability to connect culture and commerce makes her a dynamic leader. He believes her vision and creativity will help strengthen the brands’ resonance with the next generation of consumers.
Gerson herself expressed appreciation for Gap Inc.’s cultural legacy, crediting the company for undergoing a “remarkable renaissance” as a brand closely associated with the culture of music.
Fashion Meets Culture
Gap Inc. has consistently sought to bridge the gap between fashion and culture. This season, the company featured the girl group Katseye in its "Better in Denim" campaign. Last year, it hired designer Zac Posen as executive vice president and creative director. Posen has been dressing celebrities in Gap, including Timothée Chalamet, Anne Hathaway, and Demi Moore, for red carpet events. At the 2025 Met Gala, actress Laura Harrier wore a custom look designed by Posen, who also serves as chief creative officer at the Old Navy division.
Financial Performance
Despite challenges in the retail sector, Gap Inc. reported net sales of $3.7 billion for the second quarter ended August 2. While this figure was flat compared to the previous year, comparable sales rose 1 percent year-over-year, indicating a more positive trend. Operating income remained essentially flat at $292 million, while net income increased to $216 million from $206 million in the same period last year.
Board Members and Key Leadership
In addition to Dickson, Shattuck, and Gerson, the Gap Inc. board includes notable figures such as Brady Brewer, CEO of Starbucks International; Salaam Coleman Smith, former executive vice president of the Disney ABC Television Group; Lisa Donohue, former CEO of Publicis Spine; Robert Fisher, managing director of Pisces Inc.; William Fisher, executive vice chairman of Pisces Inc.; Kathryn A. Hall, executive managing director of Pathstone; Amy Miles, former chair and CEO of Regal Entertainment Group; Chris O'Neill, CEO of GrowthLoop; and Tariq Shaukat, CEO of Sonar.
Emerging Trends and Industry Highlights
As part of its broader strategy, Gap Inc. continues to engage with emerging trends in the fashion industry. The 2025 Fashion Scholarship Fund Summer Series featured insights from prominent figures such as Rachel Scott, Raul Lopez, and Edward Enninful. Additionally, actress Jenna Ortega recently made headlines by wearing a custom distressed GapStudio gown that showcased the brand’s evolving aesthetic.
