Mississippi Ranks Among Top 20 States for Teachers, According to New Analysis

A recent analysis has placed Mississippi among the top 20 states in the country for teaching opportunities. The evaluation by WalletHub considered various factors that contribute to a favorable teaching environment across all 50 states and the District of Columbia.

The study focused on two main categories: Opportunity & Competition and Academic & Work Environment. These categories were assessed using 24 different metrics, with each contributing to an overall score out of 100 points. Opportunity & Competition accounted for up to 70 points, while the remaining 30 points came from the Academic & Work Environment category.

Opportunity & Competition evaluated aspects such as job security, pay adjusted for cost of living, starting salaries, average salaries, tenure, and income growth over time. It also looked at the number of teachers with "inadequate pensions" and the projected competition for teacher positions in 2032.

Academic & Work Environment examined factors like the quality of school districts, student-to-teacher ratios, and the presence of annual evaluation processes for teachers. It also considered whether states had comprehensive digital learning strategies and effective requirements for teacher performance.

According to Chip Lupo, a WalletHub analyst, the states that offer the most rewarding teaching careers are those that provide competitive salaries, invest in educational resources, implement laws that improve school systems, and create supportive conditions that reduce teacher turnover.

Mississippi's Ranking and Performance

Mississippi ranked No. 18 among the best states for teachers, scoring 47.08 out of 100 points. In the Opportunity & Competition category, the state ranked No. 10, with Utah taking the top spot nationally.

Despite being last in overall teacher pay, Mississippi ranked higher when considering only new teacher compensation. However, WalletHub did not include Mississippi among the lowest states for teacher salaries when adjusting for cost of living.

In the Academic & Work Environment category, Mississippi ranked No. 40, with Delaware securing the top position. This category looked at factors such as digital learning strategies, access to technology, and teacher evaluation processes. It also considered projected teacher turnover rates.
