The Historic Sale of Space-Flown Sacagawea Gold Coins

A collection of gold commemorative coins that traveled into space aboard a NASA shuttle recently made headlines after fetching record-breaking bids at auction. These coins, known as Sacagawea dollars, had been hidden and kept in secrecy for years, stored in one of the most secure locations in the United States—Fort Knox in Kentucky.

The coins were part of a historic mission in 1999 when they were carried aboard the space shuttle Columbia. This mission marked a significant milestone as it was the first to be commanded by a woman, Air Force Col. (ret.) Eileen Collins. The coins traveled nearly 2 million miles in orbit during the mission, which also helped deploy the Chandra X-Ray Observatory, according to NASA.

The U.S. government recently auctioned seven of these space-flown Sacagawea dollars through Stack’s Bowers Galleries, a California-based auction house. Alongside them was an eighth coin that did not go into space. The total sale reached an impressive $3.28 million, with some coins selling for over half a million dollars.

The Significance of the Sale

Two of the coins sold for $550,000 each, tying them as the most valuable U.S. gold dollars since the Civil War and the most valuable space-flown federal coins ever sold at auction. They also set a new record as the most valuable Sacagawea dollars ever sold. The only coin without the "space flown" distinction sold for $120,000.

This event marks another high-profile sale of items with a cosmic theme. In July, a piece of Mars was sold for $5.3 million at a Sotheby’s auction in New York, highlighting the growing interest in space-related artifacts.

The Fate of the Space Shuttle Columbia

The space shuttle Columbia is remembered for its tragic end in 2003. During the STS-107 mission, the shuttle disintegrated upon re-entry into Earth's atmosphere, resulting in the loss of all seven astronauts on board. This incident was the second fatal space shuttle disaster, following the Challenger disaster in 1986.

Despite this tragedy, the legacy of the Columbia mission remains significant. It was a testament to human exploration and scientific advancement, with the successful deployment of the Chandra X-Ray Observatory being one of its most notable achievements.

Who Was Sacagawea?

Sacagawea was a crucial figure in American history, serving as an interpreter and guide for explorers Meriwether Lewis and William Clark during their 1805 expedition from the Mississippi River to the Pacific Coast. Her contributions were vital to the success of the journey, and her legacy continues to inspire many.

Christine Karstedt, director of marketing at Stack’s Bowers Galleries, emphasized the importance of these coins in commemorating the leadership achievements of American women, from the days of Lewis and Clark to the Space Shuttle era. She noted that these endeavors would not have succeeded without the courage and determination of women who paved the way.

The NASA Space Shuttle Program

The space shuttle program, NASA's fourth human spaceflight campaign, ran from 1981 to 2011. It involved using iconic spacecraft to transport crew and cargo between Earth and orbit. Approved by the president in 1972, the program completed 135 missions over three decades, playing a critical role in constructing the International Space Station and launching satellites.

Four retired space shuttles are currently on display across the United States:

  • Enterprise at the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum in New York
  • Atlantis at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida
  • Endeavor at the Samuel Oschin Air and Space Center in Los Angeles
  • Discovery at the Smithsonian's National Air and Space Museum Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center in Virginia

Discovery may soon be relocated to Space Center Houston, under a bill signed by President Donald Trump in July.

These space-flown Sacagawea coins represent more than just valuable collectibles; they symbolize the achievements of human exploration and the enduring legacy of those who ventured beyond our planet.
