Vafeades Urges Collaboration for Fair, Sustainable Shipping

The Importance of Collaboration in the Shipping Industry

Transport Minister Alexis Vafeades emphasized the importance of collaboration among all stakeholders to ensure a strong, fair, and sustainable shipping industry. He highlighted that the national shipping strategy is guiding the efforts of the Cypriot government to tackle the challenges facing the sector.

During the opening of the International Transport Workers’ Federation’s (ITF) Maritime Roundtable in Limassol, Vafeades shared his thoughts on the critical role of cooperation in maintaining a resilient shipping industry. The event brought together more than 180 unionists from 140 countries, with the aim of strengthening international trade union cooperation and defending the rights of seafarers and dockers.

Cyprus as a Leading Maritime Nation

In his speech, the minister expressed pride in Cyprus being recognized as a maritime nation and one of the leading shipping centers in Europe and the Mediterranean. He noted that the country has a modern registry, dynamic ports, and a strong logistics network. As a member state of the European Union, Cyprus aligns its maritime policies with European and international frameworks, aiming to set high standards in the region.

Vafeades also highlighted that beyond ships and trade routes, it is the people of the shipping sector who make global trade possible. He acknowledged the often unseen work of those involved in the shipping industry, emphasizing that without them, the global economy would come to a halt. This is why the work of the ITF is so important, as it focuses on protecting and promoting the rights of these workers.

Supporting the Work of ITF Inspectors

The minister also stressed that Cyprus values and supports the work of ITF inspectors at all of its ports. He pointed out that the shipping industry faces several challenges, including the green transition, digitalization, and the retention and attraction of human capital to maritime professions.

Addressing Challenges Through Strategy

To address these challenges, the Cypriot government is implementing a national shipping strategy focused on sustainability, digital transformation, and competitiveness. Under the guidance of the President of the Republic, this strategy directs efforts to modernize ports, expand supply chain capabilities, and adopt cutting-edge technologies.

Vafeades mentioned that the government is investing in green shipping initiatives, encouraging alternative fuels, and working closely with the EU and the International Maritime Organization towards the goal of decarbonization. Additionally, the government is strengthening training and education, equipping seafarers with new skills while prioritizing mental health and wellbeing.

Commitment to Transparency and Standards

The minister assured that Cyprus will maintain a responsible and transparent registry, ensuring that the country continues to uphold high standards and fair practices. He emphasized that no government or organization can address these challenges alone but must work together with companies, trade unions, and international organizations to ensure a strong, fair, and sustainable shipping industry.

A Vital Platform for Dialogue

Monday’s discussion in Limassol was described as a vital platform for dialogue, allowing the exchange of ideas on difficult issues and the formation of a common path forward. Vafeades concluded by stating that together, they can shape a shipping sector that is greener, safer, and above all, fairer for those who make it a reality.
