Mass. Rubber Maker Shifts to Pet Toy Production

A New Direction for a Family-Owned Business
In business, as in life, challenges often lead to unexpected opportunities. When faced with an unexpected surplus of materials, one Massachusetts-based company found a way to turn its situation into a success story. This transformation highlights how adaptability and creativity can open new doors, even in the most unlikely of circumstances.
Jefferson Rubber Works, a long-standing industrial rubber products company based in Worcester, Massachusetts, has been known for manufacturing items such as rubber medical devices and components for wastewater systems. For years, the company focused on these industrial applications, relying on its expertise in rubber injection molding. However, a shift in the market forced the company to rethink its approach.
In the late 1990s, a major customer of Jefferson Rubber Works sold off its operations to a competitor, leaving the company with an excess of flexible rubber membrane discs that were no longer needed for their original purpose. Rather than let these materials go to waste, the company’s president, Dave Pentland, decided to explore alternative uses for them.
After some brainstorming, Pentland had an idea: what if these discs could be used as dog toys? He gave some of the discs to employees, who then took them home to play with their pets. The response was overwhelmingly positive. Pets loved the soft, durable material, and employees began to see potential in this new direction.
This experience led to the creation of Ruff Dawg, a pet toy company born from the remnants of Jefferson Rubber Works’ industrial operations. The first product launched under the Ruff Dawg brand was the K-9 Flier, a soft frisbee made from the same rubber membrane discs that had once been used in wastewater systems.
Pentland explained that there was a gap in the market for a soft, durable toy that could withstand the rough play of dogs. “We did some research and found that no one had a soft frisbee like that in the pet industry,” he said. “So we said, ‘Why don’t we give it a try?’”
By leveraging existing equipment, materials, and manufacturing techniques, Ruff Dawg quickly expanded its product line to include nearly 50 different rubber dog toys. These products are now sold nationally and internationally, reaching customers in 15 countries around the world.
Although Ruff Dawg currently accounts for only 20% of Jefferson Rubber Works’ business, Pentland acknowledges that the toy division is growing rapidly. “We have our technical products that we make, bladders for water tanks and medical products, but everybody loves making dog toys,” he said.
One of the key factors that helped Ruff Dawg stand out in the competitive pet toy market was its decision to offer a lifetime guarantee on most of its products. Ten years ago, the company introduced a policy that allowed customers to return any toy that was destroyed by their pets, regardless of age or condition. In exchange, they would receive a brand-new replacement.
“This policy is unique in the industry,” Pentland noted. “No matter how old the toy is, if your pet destroys it, just send it back and we’ll replace it.”
This commitment to quality and customer satisfaction has helped Ruff Dawg build a loyal following and establish itself as a trusted name in the pet toy industry. It also serves as a testament to the power of innovation and the ability to find value in unexpected situations. What started as a surplus of rubber discs has evolved into a thriving business that brings joy to both pets and their owners.
