Meta Connect 2025: A Big Year for Smart Glasses and AI

Meta Connect, the company’s annual event focused on augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR), artificial intelligence (AI), and the metaverse, is just days away. This year promises to be a significant one, with major updates expected in smart glasses, AI capabilities, and the evolution of the metaverse.

The event will follow a slightly different format compared to previous years. Mark Zuckerberg is scheduled to deliver an evening keynote at 5 PM PT on Wednesday, September 17. The next day, a developer-focused keynote will take place at 10 AM PT on September 18, followed by additional sessions and discussions.

While the reasons for the format change remain unclear, the anticipation around this year’s event is high. Expectations are set for two new models of smart glasses, including the first consumer-ready version from Meta that features a display. Additionally, there are reports of new AI and metaverse updates that could reshape how users interact with these technologies.

New and Updated Smart Glasses

The most anticipated announcement is likely to be the release of Meta’s next-generation smart glasses. These frames, internally known as "Hypernova," are expected to be the first consumer-oriented glasses from Meta that include a display. While they won’t offer the immersive AR experience seen in the Orion prototype, the display will allow users to view notifications and photo previews.

The glasses will also come with a dedicated wristband, similar to what was showcased with the Orion model, enabling gesture-based control. Reports suggest the glasses could launch later this year and carry a price tag of around $800. Initially, there were rumors that the glasses might be sold under a different brand like EssilorLuxottica, but it now seems they will be branded as Ray-Ban.

A promotional video surfaced online just days before the event, showcasing the "Meta Ray-Ban Display" glasses with a heads-up display and a wristband. The video does not reveal the price, but given the higher cost compared to other Ray-Ban models, it appears Meta is positioning this as a premium product with limited appeal. Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has suggested that Hypernova may have a negligible market share.

In addition to the Ray-Ban model, there are hints of a new version of Oakley sunglasses, based on the Sphaera design. These glasses are expected to feature a single camera but no display. Leaked renders also suggest new non-display versions of Ray-Ban glasses, including clear frames and sunglasses.

Rocco Basilico, EssilorLuxottica’s Chief Wearables Officer, has hinted that this year’s Connect will be “extra special.” In a post on Threads, he expressed pride in the collaboration between the companies.

Developers may also see new integrations with third-party smart glasses. Early versions of the Connect schedule suggest that Meta is preparing to give developers access to its smart glasses platform, which could lead to more functionality and broader app support.

Meta AI

AI remains a central theme at this year’s event. Meta AI has over a billion monthly users, and new features are expected both on the glasses and within the company’s apps. Reports indicate that Meta is working on a lineup of non-English speaking “character-driven” bots for its platforms. However, the company has faced scrutiny over its chatbots, recently blocking teens' access to many user-generated characters due to safety concerns.

Zuckerberg is also expected to discuss his vision for creating “superintelligence,” a concept he outlined in a manifesto earlier this year. Recent changes in AI team structure and an aggressive hiring spree suggest Meta is investing heavily in this area. There are also signs that the company may be shifting away from open-source AI, particularly with delays in the Llama 4 model.

What About the Metaverse?

Although the metaverse has taken a backseat to AI in recent years, it remains a key focus at Connect. Meta CTO Andrew Bosworth teased updates to “metaverse software” related to Horizon Worlds. The company has already provided a preview to developers of plans to integrate AI-powered NPCs into the metaverse, and more details are expected.

While no new Quest headsets are anticipated, there could be updates on third-party VR headsets that run Meta’s VR software. Last year, Meta announced partnerships with ASUS, Lenovo, and Xbox to develop Meta Horizon OS headsets. Although details have been scarce, a recent leak suggests ASUS may be the first to launch, featuring face and eye tracking.

Another intriguing possibility is an update on Meta’s holographic Codec avatars. Although current VR headsets lack the necessary sensors to support this technology, UploadVR suggests that a more basic version could be demonstrated, potentially working with video calls on WhatsApp and Messenger.

Final Thoughts

As the event approaches, the excitement around Meta Connect continues to build. With new smart glasses, AI advancements, and updates to the metaverse, this year’s conference promises to be a pivotal moment for the company and its vision for the future of technology.
