Omaha couple charged with exploiting vulnerable adult in their care

The Arrest of an Omaha Couple in a Financial Exploitation Case
Douglas County deputies have arrested the second half of an Omaha couple accused of financial exploitation of a vulnerable adult who lived in their home earlier this year. Patrick Thornton, 39, and Andrea Heim, 42, are each facing one count of abuse of a vulnerable adult. This case has raised serious concerns about the treatment of individuals under guardianship and the responsibilities of caretakers.
The allegations stem from a situation involving an adult with disabilities who was under a full conservatorship or guardianship due to medical conditions. A case worker from Hands of the Heartland reported suspicious activity on the individual’s debit card, which led to an investigation into the couple's actions.
Thornton and Heim, who were living together, were assigned as caretakers for the vulnerable adult in March. They received a monthly stipend of $755 to help cover the costs of room and board. However, investigators discovered that the adult’s debit card had over $2,500 in unauthorized purchases. These included fast food meals, smoking products, and clothing. Security footage showed individuals resembling the suspects making some of these purchases.
County officials issued warrants for both Thornton and Heim at the beginning of July. Less than a week later, deputies arrested Thornton, who has since filed a written arraignment and is currently in the pretrial process. No trial date has been set for him yet. On Monday morning, deputies arrested Heim, and a Douglas County judge set her bond at 10% of $5,000. Her next court appearance is scheduled for October 24.
Additional records show that Thornton was previously convicted of terroristic threats in a 2015 case, which was a felony. Despite this, Hands of the Heartland stated in a public statement that their internal review confirmed the contractors met all required guidelines, including those related to criminal background screening. The organization emphasized its commitment to the safety and well-being of the individuals it supports.
Hands of the Heartland released a detailed statement following the incident. It said that the organization discovered irregularities in the client’s financial account through routine auditing in May 2025 and promptly reported its concerns to the authorities. The company terminated its relationship with the contracted providers immediately and fully cooperated with the investigations. The statement also highlighted that the contractors met all mandated guidelines for shared living providers, including background checks.
This case has sparked discussions about the need for stricter oversight of caretakers and the importance of protecting vulnerable adults from exploitation. While Hands of the Heartland maintains that its procedures were followed, the actions of the couple raise questions about the adequacy of current safeguards.

Ongoing Investigations and Implications
The case highlights the broader issue of financial exploitation within caregiving arrangements. As the legal proceedings continue, the community remains concerned about the protection of vulnerable individuals and the effectiveness of existing systems in place to prevent such abuses.
