Paul Scholes Criticizes Manchester United’s Recruitment Strategy

Paul Scholes, a former Manchester United player and respected football analyst, has voiced his concerns about the club’s recent summer transfer dealings. He believes that the focus of the recruitment team was misplaced, with the club failing to address key areas of weakness in their squad. Scholes argues that the problem lies not with the manager’s tactics but with the overall quality of players available to the team.

Manchester United suffered a 3-0 defeat against Manchester City in their latest match, continuing a disappointing start to the season. The Red Devils have managed only four points from their first four league games and were eliminated from the Carabao Cup by Grimsby Town, a League Two side. These results have led to growing criticism of manager Ruben Amorim, particularly regarding his preferred formation.

Amorim has been criticized for his reliance on the 3-4-3 system, which has not yielded positive results. However, Scholes is not convinced that the formation itself is the main issue. Instead, he highlights the lack of quality among the players currently at Old Trafford.

“Whatever system you play doesn’t mean you play badly,” Scholes told BBC 5 Live. “I actually don’t think the system was the problem. If you look at the stats, Manchester United had more possession than Manchester City at their ground. That doesn’t tell you they got overrun in midfield, I don’t think they did, but the quality of player in there just isn’t quite up to standard.”

Recruitment Focus: A Missed Opportunity

Scholes emphasized that the issue extends beyond the current transfer window. He believes that central midfield was an area the recruitment team should have prioritized during the summer. While the club did bring in a goalkeeper, Belgian youngster Senne Lammens, Scholes feels this move came too late. Additionally, the club signed three forwards—Bryan Mbeumo, Matheus Cunha, and Benjamin Sesko—but Scholes questions whether this was necessary.

“I don’t think the quality is there,” Scholes said. “I thought all summer, a central midfielder with legs, who can play, who can control a game of football, will be an absolute priority, and it never seemed to happen. Maybe they panicked a bit towards the end and [Carlos] Baleba came up, but it was never something they really planned for. Goalkeeper as well was a major issue. Did we really need to get to that Grimsby game to realize [Andre] Onana was not good enough?”

Scholes also questioned the decision to sign multiple forwards when the team needed reinforcement behind the attack. “The forward side needed addressing, but did it need three of them? I’m not sure it did. I thought it was more important to get behind the forward line right, and I don’t think they’ve addressed it at all.”

Managerial Challenges and Systemic Issues

While Scholes acknowledges that Amorim cannot rigidly stick to a plan that continues to fail, he paints a bleak picture of the current squad. He believes that regardless of the formation used, the team lacks the quality required to compete at the highest level.

“He cannot carry on playing this way with the results they’ve had,” Scholes said. “He just can’t do it. At some point, there has to be a moment where he thinks he has to change something because whatever he’s doing now is not working.”

Scholes pointed to Amorim’s record, noting that the manager has only secured eight wins in 31 games, with 16 losses. He expressed frustration with the manager’s stubbornness, suggesting that even a change in formation may not be enough if the squad lacks quality.

“Whether it’s a 4-3-3 or a 4-4-2, whatever they go to, I’m not sure the quality is there in any area of the pitch which is good enough to get them to where they need to be.”

Looking Ahead

With the Premier League season still in its early stages, the pressure on both the manager and the recruitment team is mounting. Scholes’ comments highlight the urgent need for a strategic shift in how Manchester United builds their squad. Without significant improvements in player quality, the club may struggle to return to its former glory.
