Pope Leo XIV Criticizes Extreme Wealth Inequality and Highlights Elon Musk's Trillion-Dollar Pay Package

In a recent interview, Pope Leo XIV addressed the growing issue of extreme wealth inequality, specifically pointing to the staggering fortune of Elon Musk. The pontiff emphasized that the CEO of Tesla and SpaceX’s reported trillion-dollar pay package symbolizes a troubling shift in societal values. He questioned the significance of such wealth, suggesting that if it becomes the sole measure of success, society faces serious challenges.

The pope, who is 70 years old, highlighted a stark contrast between past and present corporate compensation practices. He noted that over half a century ago, CEOs earned four to six times what their workers received. Today, however, the disparity has widened significantly, with some executives earning up to 600 times the salary of their average employees.

This conversation came as Tesla’s board proposed a massive pay package for Musk, which includes 423.7 million additional shares of the company over the next decade. At the very least, these shares are valued at $148.7 billion, and if they appreciate as projected, Musk could become the world’s first trillionaire. The compensation is tied to achieving several ambitious goals set by the company, including delivering 20 million vehicles, producing one million robots, and operating one million Robotaxis.

The board stated that Musk possesses unique leadership qualities essential for transforming Tesla and fulfilling its long-term mission. The compensation plan also includes various EBITDA targets, emphasizing the need for significant operational milestones.

Musk, who is 54 years old and currently worth $476 billion, has previously expressed his desire for greater control over Tesla. In January 2024, he posted on X (formerly Twitter) that he would consider building products outside of Tesla if he didn’t have at least 25% voting control. He argued that this level of influence would allow him to lead the company in AI and robotics without being overly dominant.

Currently, Musk holds a 13% stake in Tesla, which he believes is insufficient for his vision. His comments reflect a broader concern about the concentration of power and wealth in the hands of a few individuals.

During the interview, the pope was asked about how to address polarization. He emphasized the importance of understanding the root causes, citing factors such as the 2020 pandemic and extreme wealth disparities. He pointed out that the widening gap between the working class and the wealthiest individuals contributes significantly to societal division.

This is not the first time Pope Leo XIV has spoken out against extreme wealth. Earlier this year, he called on global leaders to address the wealth gap during the Jubilee of Governments. He stressed the need to reduce the disproportionate wealth held by a few while addressing the needs of the poor. According to the pope, this imbalance leads to persistent injustice, which can result in violence and even war.

The pope’s remarks underscore a growing concern about the impact of wealth inequality on society. As the gap between the rich and the poor continues to widen, the need for systemic change becomes increasingly urgent.
