A New Chapter for Valiant Cross Academy

Valiant Cross Academy, a faith-based private school in downtown Montgomery that serves only boys, is taking a significant step forward by establishing part of its elementary school on the campus of Alabama State University (ASU). This collaboration was officially announced by leaders from both Valiant Cross Academy and ASU, marking a new era of educational opportunity for students.

The partnership will allow Valiant Cross Academy to use the Zelia Stephens Early Childhood Center at ASU for kindergarten, first, and second grade this year. The plan is to expand to include third grade in the following academic year. This move not only provides a physical space for learning but also opens up new opportunities for students, including access to dual enrollment programs, scholarships, internships, and career readiness initiatives offered by ASU.

A Deep Connection Between VCA and ASU

Anthony Brock, co-founder and head of school at Valiant Cross Academy, has a strong personal connection to ASU. He is an alumnus of the university and currently serves on the Foundation Board of Directors and the Continuing Education Policy Council at ASU. Brock’s own early education took place at the Zelia Stephens Early Childhood Center, which further strengthens the bond between the two institutions.

“I feel that partnering with Alabama State University to open Valiant Cross Academy on its campus ranks as one of the most significant highlights of my life,” Brock said. “The support and love from my ASU family have profoundly impacted both me and the VCA community. I would not be the educator I am today without ASU.”

Expanding Opportunities Through Collaboration

ASU President Quinton Ross emphasized the importance of this partnership in continuing the university's long-standing commitment to community engagement. “Alabama State University has always been committed to advancing education at every level, and this historic partnership with Valiant Cross Academy represents a bold step in that mission,” Ross said. “By opening our doors to the next generation of learners, we are not only honoring the legacy of the Zelia Stephens Early Childhood Center but also affirming our responsibility to help nurture young minds, strengthen our community, and build pathways to lifelong success.”

The Road to Expansion

Earlier this year, Valiant Cross Academy announced plans to expand into a new building at 1 Court Square, located at the foot of Dexter Avenue. Initially, the school planned to open in the 2025-26 academic year. However, delays due to additional work required to prepare the space pushed back the timeline.

Kimberly Baker, director of development and marketing at VCA, explained that the need for more space arose due to an increase in student enrollment. She noted that the decision to add the ASU campus was also influenced by the school’s founders’ deep ties to the Zelia Stephens Early Childhood Center.

“Anthony, of course, is a graduate of ASU, so when this space became available, I think it was pulling at his heart,” Baker said. “Additionally, with our students being on a college campus through our partnership with Troy, which has worked beautifully for our older kids, it's just never too early to get kids adjusted to their future. If we can have these young kids going on a college campus every day and seeing what their future could be, it's just... I feel like it's a beautiful story.”

Future Plans for VCA

Once the 1 Court Square location is ready in 2026, it will be used for fourth and fifth grade students. The high school will continue to operate from its current location at 136 Catoma St.

This partnership between Valiant Cross Academy and Alabama State University represents a powerful blend of faith, education, and community. It sets the stage for a future where young learners can grow, thrive, and dream big.
