Expansion of Educational Opportunities for Educators in Texas

West Texas A&M University (WT) has taken a significant step to support educators across the state by expanding its Educators Excellence Initiative. This program, which was first introduced in June in Region 16 of the Panhandle, offers a 50% discount on tuition and mandatory fees for full-time teachers, administrators, librarians, nurses, counselors, paraprofessionals, and employees of the Education Service Center (ESC). The initiative is now broadening its reach to include Regions 17 and 18, as well as smaller schools categorized as 1A and 2A districts throughout Texas.

This expansion is expected to benefit tens of thousands of full-time educators, providing them with more accessible pathways to continue their education. The initiative aligns with WT’s historical mission of training educators, as the university was originally established as a normal school focused on preparing future teachers. Today, the Terry B. Rogers College of Education and Social Sciences remains central to the university's goals.

“WT began as a normal school, providing a training ground for educators, and the Terry B. Rogers College of Education and Social Sciences remains central to WT’s mission,” said WT President Walter V. Wendler. “The success of the Educators Excellence Initiative in Region 16 proves that rural teachers and other school employees are eager to further their education, and we are committed to assisting districts around the state in preparing their employees for the unique opportunities and challenges with smaller school districts.”

Enrollment and Growth Trends

Prospective students from eligible ESCs or school districts can now enroll in spring 2026 classes for undergraduate courses or through the WT Graduate School. Those interested in pursuing a doctorate in educational leadership can apply for the January 2027 cohort. As of September 12, approximately 275 educators from Region 16 have already taken advantage of this opportunity.

The initiative has contributed to a notable increase in enrollment at WT. According to data released on September 11, the university saw a more than 2% rise in fall 2025 enrollment. The Terry B. Rogers College of Education and Social Sciences experienced the most significant year-over-year growth among the six colleges at WT, increasing by over 6% compared to 2024.

Of the students benefiting from the tuition waiver this fall, 82% are majoring in the Department of Education, which saw an overall growth of more than 7.5%.

Regional Impact and Future Plans

Region 17, based in Lubbock, covers over 60 independent school districts and charter schools, while Region 18, based in Midland, serves about 40 school districts and charter schools. Together, these regions are expected to have over 10,000 eligible employees. Additionally, employees at more than 400 1A and 2A schools outside of Regions 16, 17, and 18 are now also eligible for the program.

Leaders from both regions have expressed appreciation for the initiative. Dr. Kyle Wargo, executive director of Region 17 ESC, stated, “We are very appreciative of WT giving the opportunity for employees in school districts across Region 17 to receive a 50 percent reduction in tuition and mandatory fees.” Similarly, Dr. Dewitt Smith, executive director/CEO of Region 18 ESC, praised the partnership, saying, “This partnership not only reflects a shared belief in the value of public education, but it also creates a meaningful pathway for our Region 18 ESC staff and district employees to continue their growth and deepen their impact.”

How to Apply

For those interested in checking eligibility or enrolling in the program, prospective students should contact the admissions office at admissions@wtamu.edu or the registrar at registrar@wtamu.edu. Additional conditions, including financial aid benefits, may apply to the total cost of tuition.

Historical Context and Continued Commitment

WT was founded in 1910 as West Texas State Normal College, a school dedicated to training teachers. Today, approximately 75% of all teachers and administrators in the Panhandle region have at least one degree or certificate from WT. This continued commitment to education underscores the university’s role in shaping the future of teaching and learning across the state.
