Coppola Sells Rare FP Journe Watch for $10.75 Million

A Record-Breaking Sale at Phillips' New York Watch Auction XIII
This weekend, Phillips' New York Watch Auction XIII witnessed a historic moment as a F.P. Journe FFC prototype, owned by director Francis Ford Coppola, sold for an astonishing $10.75 million. This sale marked the highest price ever achieved for a timepiece from the independent watchmaker. Over the past five years, the secondary market for F.P. Journe watches has seen a dramatic surge in value, and there are no signs of this trend slowing down. While the high price of this particular watch can be attributed to its unique provenance—linked to a prominent Hollywood figure and the innovative vision of one of the most respected living watchmakers—it's clear that other F.P. Journe pieces in the auction also exceeded their top estimates by significant margins.
Despite this success, the brand itself is not entirely pleased with the current state of the secondary market. Pierre Halimi, the longtime manager of F.P. Journe in America, expressed concerns during a panel discussion at Robb Report's House of Robb event in Miami. He described the current prices as "stupid" and "way too high," indicating that the company is not happy with the situation. Halimi used Hermès as a positive example, highlighting how the French house maintains stability regardless of economic conditions. He also pointed out that the inflated auction prices attract collectors and flippers who are more interested in the financial gain than the craftsmanship and artistry behind the watches.
The Origins of the FFC Prototype
The concept for the FFC prototype originated during a 2012 dinner at Coppola's Napa Valley estate, where he asked François-Paul Journe whether a human hand had ever been used to tell time. The resulting design—a blackened-titanium sculpted hand with five articulated fingers that indicate the hours, while minutes are displayed on a rotating outer ring—represents a bold and imaginative departure from traditional watch dials.
Mechanically, the FFC is remarkably intuitive despite its theatrical display. A cam-driven system choreographs the opening and closing of the fingers, allowing the hand to "count" each hour with surprising clarity. The minutes track is powered by a modified automatic calibre from the Octa family. True to Journe tradition, the movement is crafted in solid 18-karat rose gold, a material the watchmaker reserves for his highest complications. This choice offers stability, durability, and a warm visual contrast to the dark titanium of the case.
The finishing of the watch is equally refined, featuring sharp interior angles, hand-polished bevels, guilloché plates, and the richly textured sculpted hand set against the smooth, almost liquid flow of the minute ring. Together, these elements make the watch not just a cinematic concept come to life, but a technically sophisticated piece of haute horlogerie.
The Financial Burden Behind the Sale
Even the most sophisticated collectors may sometimes need to part ways with their prized possessions for a lucrative price. Coppola reportedly put the prototype up for auction due to the enormous financial burden he incurred from the creation of his latest film, Megalopolis. According to the Hollywood Reporter, the film cost $120 million to make but has only earned $14.4 million worldwide since its 2024 release. The director insisted that the film must be seen in theaters, and it was only recently released digitally, although it is still not available on major platforms like HBO or Netflix.
This ethos aligns with F.P. Journe's steadfast respect for its creations. Their shared vision is about the craft, not the money. And that, is exactly why Journe likely had no qualms about the public sale of the treasured prototype.
Other Notable Highlights from the Auction
In addition to the record-breaking FFC prototype, several other F.P. Journe pieces in the auction also performed exceptionally well, surpassing their estimated values by hundreds of thousands of dollars. This continued success in the secondary market highlights the growing demand for these unique and meticulously crafted timepieces.
As the luxury watch market continues to evolve, the balance between artistic integrity and financial value remains a critical topic for both creators and collectors. For now, F.P. Journe's legacy stands as a testament to the enduring power of craftsmanship and innovation in the world of haute horlogerie.
