Our Expert Gardener Reveals Dwarf vs. Standard Apple Trees

Could a dwarf apple tree be an option for your yard? If you're thinking about adding an apple tree to your landscape, it's important to understand the different varieties and how they compare. We reached out to Tiffany Selvey, a Master Gardener from House Digest, to get insights into apple tree options, particularly focusing on the differences between dwarf and standard varieties.

"The most obvious difference between a dwarf apple species and a standard type is its size at maturity," Selvey explained. "When fully grown, a dwarf cultivar generally stays under 10 feet tall," she added, noting that these trees can be kept even smaller depending on how and when they're pruned.

Still too large for your space? "There are even some mini-dwarf trees that are perfect for containers and only grow to about 5 feet," Selvey noted. In contrast, standard apple trees can reach up to 30 feet tall, making them difficult for casual backyard gardeners to harvest from. If you're looking for quicker results, dwarf apple trees may be the way to go. Selvey pointed out that "dwarf species will produce fruit more quickly when planted as a sapling, within about three years. In contrast, a one or two-year-old standard apple tree sapling will take about seven years to produce." However, she also mentioned that standard trees will ultimately yield more fruit over time.

Our Expert: Caring for Dwarf Apple Trees

Knowing how to care for a dwarf apple tree is slightly different from caring for a standard apple tree. Selvey provided some insights in her exclusive conversation with House Digest. "General care for all apple trees is similar, but there are some exceptions," she said. For instance, dwarf species grown in containers may require more water and fertilizer than standard apple trees planted in the ground.

Pruning is another key aspect of apple tree care. "Standard apple trees need significant pruning in the first few years for shape and health," Selvey explained. "Likewise, if you're growing a dwarf species as an espalier or trying to keep it extra compact, that will also require frequent, specialized pruning." It’s helpful to learn how to prune apple trees effectively.

If disease resistance is a concern, Selvey noted that both dwarf and standard apple trees come in cultivars bred for resistance. Pest management relates to the overall health of the tree, she said, adding that "weak trees attract more pests." That's why it's beneficial to know tips and tricks to help apple trees thrive in your yard.

How to Choose the Apple Tree Type That's Right for Your Needs

When it comes to selecting the right kind of apple tree, Selvey emphasized that the first consideration should be whether the tree can thrive in your climate. She also advised determining where you want to plant it, which will help you decide the best size of tree and then choose a specific species.

Selvey shared that many people look for apple varieties they’re used to buying at the grocery store, like Fuji or Pink Lady, but this isn’t always a good idea. She mentioned that while she loves Honeycrisp apples, "this species isn't appropriate for my hot and humid southern garden."

Selvey stated that the best kind of apple tree to grow in a backyard depends on several factors. She suggested asking yourself: Do you plan to harvest and preserve or store your apples? "If so," she said, "it might be worth planting a standard species and dealing with the challenges of harvesting from a larger tree." She also mentioned pruning techniques that can make standard trees easier to manage.

Heirloom species are available only in standard sizes, Selvey said, noting one of her favorites, "Arkansas Black, a flavorful storage apple that only comes in a full-sized tree." In closing, Selvey stated that "for those who have limited space or don't want to deal with harvesting or pruning a larger tree, dwarf options are wonderful. There are so many cultivars available now that you're sure to find something you like that fits your space requirements."
