3 Compelling Reasons to Avoid TN Monitors Today
The Decline of TN Monitors in Modern Displays
TN (Twisted Nematic) displays used to be the standard for many users before the rise of IPS, VA, and OLED monitors. Over time, these newer technologies have taken over, offering superior image quality, color accuracy, and HDR performance. While TN panels were once popular due to their high refresh rates and fast response times, these advantages have largely disappeared. As a result, TN monitors are becoming increasingly rare, with manufacturers phasing them out of production. Both the industry and professional gamers have moved on, and it's time for consumers to do the same.
Image Quality: A Major Drawback
One of the most significant issues with TN monitors is their poor image quality. Compared to even budget-friendly IPS or VA displays, TN panels fall short in several key areas. While modern IPS monitors can cover up to 99% of the sRGB and DCI-P3 color gamut, many TN monitors struggle to match this level of coverage. This lack of color range is only part of the problem—color accuracy is also severely lacking. Unlike IPS, VA, and OLED panels, TN monitors cannot produce vibrant, lifelike colors. Instead, they tend to render images in a flat, muted manner that fails to satisfy both gamers and creatives.
Moreover, TN panels do not support any meaningful HDR content. This makes them unsuitable for immersive media consumption, gaming, or accurate color grading. Whether you're looking for an engaging gaming experience or high-quality video playback, TN monitors simply don't deliver.

Poor Viewing Angles and Contrast Ratios
Another major drawback of TN panels is their poor viewing angles. Unlike IPS and higher-end VA monitors, which maintain image accuracy even when viewed from the side, TN panels suffer from significant color shifting. This issue might be acceptable on older laptops, but it's unacceptable on modern displays. The limited viewing angles make TN monitors less practical for multi-user setups or environments where the screen may be viewed from different angles.
In addition to this, TN panels have notoriously low contrast ratios. While OLEDs offer infinite contrast through per-pixel dimming, VA panels can achieve up to 6000:1, and even IPS panels have improved significantly, reaching up to 2500:1. TN panels, however, remain stuck at below 1000:1. This lack of contrast makes them unsuitable for tasks that require deep blacks and strong HDR performance, which are essential for gaming and media consumption.

Refresh Rates and Response Times Are No Longer a Unique Advantage
The one area where TN panels once excelled was in refresh rates and response times. They were the go-to choice for esports professionals who prioritized motion clarity over other factors. However, as other panel technologies evolved, TN panels failed to keep up. Today, IPS, VA, and OLED monitors offer refresh rates of up to 500Hz or more, along with improved image quality and features that TN panels lack.
Even in the response time department, TN panels are no longer the best option. OLED monitors, for example, can achieve response times as low as 0.1ms, while fast IPS monitors easily reach 1ms–3ms. Although TN panels may still offer similar response times, their inferior image quality and issues like ghosting make them less appealing in 2025.

Choosing the Right Monitor for Your Needs
If you're in the market for a new monitor, there are plenty of excellent options available. Budget-friendly IPS or VA displays offer great motion clarity, image quality, and modern connectivity features. For those willing to spend a bit more, OLED monitors provide stunning black levels and near-instantaneous response times.
With all this in mind, TN monitors are no longer worth considering. Whether you're a casual user, a gamer, a content creator, or an esports competitor, there are far better alternatives available that offer superior performance and value. It's time to move on from TN panels and embrace the advancements in display technology.
