AI Expert Warns: 99.9% Chance Civilization Ends in Century

The Dystopian Outlook on AI

AI researcher Roman Yampolskiy, a computer scientist specializing in AI safety and cybersecurity at the University of Louisville, has made some alarming predictions about the future of artificial intelligence. According to Yampolskiy, there is a 99.9% chance that AI will destroy humanity within the next century. This dire forecast was shared during an extensive two-hour interview with podcaster Lex Friedman, which was released on Sunday.

During the podcast, Yampolskiy expressed his concerns about the current state of AI models, stating that none of them have been proven safe. He also voiced his skepticism about the possibility of future models avoiding critical flaws. His warnings come at a time when U.S. President Donald Trump is pushing for an AI arms race, highlighting the growing urgency around this issue.

The Book That Sparks Debate

Yampolskiy recently released a book titled "AI: Unexplainable, Unpredictable, Uncontrollable," which serves as a comprehensive introduction to the core challenges posed by AI. The book delves into issues such as the unpredictability of AI outcomes and the difficulty in explaining AI decisions. It also explores more complex questions related to ownership and control, analyzing potential hazards and unintended consequences.

"The book then concludes with philosophical and existential considerations, probing into questions of AI personhood, consciousness, and the distinction between human intelligence and artificial general intelligence (AGI)."

Diverging Opinions on AI Risks

While Yampolskiy's warnings are stark, not all experts share his level of concern. Technology analysts note that early AI visionaries, including Yampolskiy, are among those issuing the most extreme warnings about the potential destruction that AI could cause.

However, some studies challenge Yampolskiy's extinction prediction, suggesting a much lower risk. A study conducted by the University of Oxford in England and Bonn in Germany found that there is only a 5% chance that AI will wipe out humanity, based on the assessment of over 2,700 AI researchers.

"People try to talk as if expecting extinction risk is a minority view, but among AI experts it is mainstream," said Katja Grace, one of the paper's authors. "The disagreement seems to be whether the risk is 1% or 20%."

Reactions from Leading AI Experts

Some top AI experts have completely rejected the idea of AI triggering a doomsday scenario. Google Brain cofounder Andrew Ng and AI godfather Yann Lecun are among those who have dismissed such claims. Lecun even accused tech leaders like OpenAI's Sam Altman of having ulterior motives for their fear-mongering about fatalistic outcomes from AI.

OpenAI's Altman has made several troubling remarks about the field, warning that AI will likely eliminate scores of jobs, which he described as not "real work." This statement led to intense backlash. Echoing Altman's predictions, many AI critics have also warned that the technology will lead to an economic crisis, displacing millions of workers with no industry escaping unscathed from AI's impact.

The Long-Term Implications

Over a decade ago, in 2015, Altman made a chilling statement, saying, "AI will probably most likely lead to the end of the world, but in the meantime, there'll be great companies." He also faced fierce criticism for suggesting earlier this year that the proliferation of AI will require "changes to the social contract."
