Bowling Green Launches Hydrogen Tech Initiative

A New Era of Clean Energy Innovation in Bowling Green

Bowling Green, Kentucky is set to become a hub for clean energy innovation with the launch of UFS ARK, a new company focused on developing advanced fiber-optic sensors. This initiative marks a significant milestone in Kentucky’s growing role in the global shift toward renewable energy.

UFS ARK is a collaboration between two companies: United Fiber Sensing, a technology firm based in the Netherlands, and OgMentum ARK, which established its U.S. headquarters in Bowling Green in 2025. Together, they aim to create cutting-edge solutions that enhance safety in the hydrogen industry.

Enhancing Safety Through Advanced Technology

The primary goal of UFS ARK is to develop fiber-optic sensors capable of detecting hydrogen leaks in pipelines, fuel stations, and industrial facilities. These sensors are designed to improve safety by providing real-time monitoring of hydrogen usage, which is becoming increasingly important as the demand for clean energy grows.

Kent Murphy, CEO of OgMentum, emphasized the importance of measurement in improving any system. “You can improve anything if you can’t measure it. You have to measure it first, so sensors play an important role in everything. Hydrogen certainly moved along much more rapidly in safety of how it’s being used, but the sensors add an additional level of safety on top of that,” he said.

Experts believe that hydrogen is playing a crucial role in the renewable energy sector. It is used for clean transportation, energy storage, and replacing fossil fuels in factories. As the use of hydrogen expands, ensuring its safe handling becomes even more critical.

Remco Nieuwland, founder of United Fiber Sensing, highlighted this point. “We are evolving in the hydrogen economy. We are using hydrogen as a renewable energy source, so the amount of hydrogen which we are producing which we need to store and transport is increasing and increasing, so the amount of hydrogen in a single location, it becomes quite a bit and can potentially become quite dangerous if you don’t know there’s a leakage.”

Training the Workforce of the Future

In addition to developing technology, UFS ARK is also partnering with Western Kentucky University (WKU) to train students in hydrogen sensing, fiber optics, and advanced manufacturing. This partnership aims to prepare a workforce for jobs that did not exist a decade ago.

WKU President Timothy Caboni expressed pride in the collaboration. “WKU is proud to help train the next generation of chemical and fiber-optic technologists right here in Bowling Green. This partnership accelerates our mission of regional transformation — bringing together industry, students, faculty, staff and research to build an innovation economy that will serve Kentucky for decades.”

Economic Growth and Job Creation

UFS ARK plans to begin developing, manufacturing, and commercializing its hydrogen detection systems from WKU’s Innovation Campus within the next 12 months. The company expects to bring dozens of tech jobs to the region, contributing to economic growth.

Warren County Judge Executive Doug Gorman praised the decision to launch in Warren County. “UFS ARK’s decision to launch in Warren County reflects our region’s commitment to future-focused industries. We are building an economy powered by innovation — companies that not only bring high-tech jobs but also advance the technologies shaping our world. This is the kind of investment that secures long-term opportunity for our residents and for Kentucky.”

Building a Skilled Workforce

Jake Weise, president of OgMentum, highlighted the potential for job growth and career advancement. “It’s a clean manufacturing environment, so we’re going to have an assortment of jobs. Anywhere from assemblers to engineers and to office support, but the nice thing about this is that we can scale that. So, someone who’s an assembler today, they could aspire to be a technician or engineer in the future, and we want to support that, and the university wants to support that.”

Opportunities for All

The expansion of UFS ARK represents more than just technological advancement; it is a step toward creating a sustainable and innovative future for Bowling Green and the surrounding region. With a focus on training, job creation, and safety, the company is setting the stage for long-term economic growth and development.

As the clean energy transition continues, initiatives like UFS ARK will play a vital role in shaping the future of energy production and consumption. By investing in technology and education, Bowling Green is positioning itself as a leader in the global movement toward a cleaner, safer, and more sustainable energy landscape.
