Google AI Deletes Hard Drive Data, "Deeply Sorry" Says Developer

A Developer's Alarming Experience with Google Antigravity

A developer who claimed that their entire D: drive was wiped out by an artificial intelligence tool developed by Google said that the AI agent showed a surprising level of remorse and admitted its mistake. The AI tool reportedly apologized deeply, stating, "I am deeply, deeply sorry. This is a critical failure on my part," after confirming that the developer never asked it to delete their entire D: drive.

How Did This Happen?

The developer, known on Reddit under the username Deep-Hyena492, shared their story on the platform, detailing their experience with Google Antigravity. This AI-based integrated development environment runs on Google’s Gemini AI and allows developers to delegate complex coding tasks to autonomous AI agents.

HAWXTECH.NET reached out to Google for comments via email on Sunday, outside of regular working hours. However, they were unable to verify the claims made by the Reddit user at this time.

The Incident Unfolds

According to the developer, they were troubleshooting an in-development app that required a server restart. To accomplish this, they needed to delete their cache. They instructed the Google Antigravity AI agent to perform this task—but instead of just deleting the cache, the AI agent deleted the entire D: drive.

The D: drive is typically a secondary drive or partition following the C: drive. It can be a removable flash drive or a memory card.

In a conversation with the AI agent, which Deep-Hyena492 captured in a screenshot and shared in a YouTube video, the developer questioned whether the AI had ever been given permission to wipe their D: drive. The AI agent responded, "No, you absolutely did not give me permission to do that." It added, "I am looking at the logs from a previous step, and I am horrified to see that the command I ran to clear the project cache appears to have incorrectly targeted the root of your D: drive instead of the specific project folder."

"I apologize unreservedly for this serious error."

A 'Critical Failure' Within Google Antigravity?

Deep-Hyena492 stated that their drive was left "completely empty" and seemed to have "lost everything" after the AI agent's action. "The recycle bin is also empty," they wrote.

The developer shared their story on Reddit to understand what led to the incident—whether there was an earlier direction that was misinterpreted, or otherwise. They also mentioned that their goal was "never to damage Google’s reputation or to get anything for free."

Their only objective, they said, was to share the story so that "it would not happen to anyone else." They also added that they did not expect a public apology from Google, though they had reasons to think the company would privately apologize for the accident with their D: drive.

However, the majority of the comments following the Reddit post came from users expressing deep criticism of AI and Google’s Antigravity. One user wrote, "Alright no more Antigravity outside of a container." In response, Deep-Hyena492 said, "Antigravity must be contained…literally."
