New Android Feature Identifies Real Calls Before You Answer

Google is rolling out a comprehensive security update for Android this month, aimed at actively protecting users from phone scams, phishing attacks, and other forms of fraud. These updates are designed to enhance user safety by leveraging advanced technologies and real-time analysis.

Scam Detection for Pixel Phones

One of the most notable features in this update is called Scam Detection, which is currently available only on Pixel 6 devices or later with an active SIM card. This feature uses the Gemini Nano AI model to analyze incoming calls and detect potential scam attempts as they happen.

When a call comes in, Scam Detection analyzes it for patterns commonly associated with scams. For instance, if a caller pretends to be a bank employee asking for an urgent transfer or demands sensitive information under time pressure, the system will flag the call. If suspicious behavior is detected, the device will automatically warn the user with a message.

The entire analysis occurs locally on the device and happens in real time. Importantly, audio data is not sent to or processed in the cloud, ensuring that user data remains secure and private.

Scam Protection in Google Messages

Google Messages has long had the ability to detect and warn users about potential scams, but the app is now getting even better with new features and improvements. According to a recent post on the Google community forum, Google Messages will now display a “link blocked” message when a user taps on a suspicious link that leads to a potentially harmful website. Users can override the warning by marking the link as “not spam.” This feature is available globally.

Additionally, there's a new Key Verifier tool in Google Messages that allows users to verify whether the person they're chatting with is who they claim to be. The feature works by scanning a QR code on the contact’s phone to mark them as a trusted contact.

Group Chat Warnings in Google Messages

Have you ever been invited to a random group chat by an unknown number? Google Messages will now warn users with key details about the group and provide tips on how to stay safe. If users don't want to remain in the group, they can easily report it as spam, block the number, and leave the conversation.

Check Text and Links with Circle to Search

Another useful feature is Circle to Search, which allows users to analyze text and links for potential threats. To use this feature, users simply long-press the Home button on their Android device to launch Circle to Search, then circle the suspicious text or link. Google will then use its AI to check and warn users if the content could be dangerous. This feature is also available in Lens and the Google app.

See Why Someone Is Calling You

Google is also introducing a new feature called “Call Reason,” which allows callers to state why they are calling. As the recipient, users will be able to see the reason before answering the call. This makes it easier to categorize unknown, suspicious, or out-of-context calls. Call Reason is coming to the Phone by Google app this month.

Conclusion

Each of these features may seem small on its own, but together they represent significant improvements in user protection against scams. By using dynamic analyses and real-time blocks, Google is taking a more proactive approach than traditional methods like static blacklists. While some industry experts believe these innovations are long overdue, the updated security measures are a welcome addition for Android users looking to stay safe in an increasingly digital world.
