Amphibians such as frogs, toads, newts, and salamanders must navigate dangerous roads to reach vernal ponds where they breed. These journeys are particularly perilous because the animals are small, dark, and often move slowly. A large salamander may be only seven inches long, while smaller species can be just three inches in length. This makes them nearly invisible to drivers, leading to high mortality rates.

The consequences of road crossings for amphibians extend beyond individual losses. In Monkton, Vermont, a town with a population of around 2,000 people, residents raised nearly $350,000 to support the creation of amphibian underpasses. This initiative was driven by a growing awareness of the impact of road mortality on local wildlife.

Steve Parren, a retired wildlife biologist, played a key role in this effort. He recalls how the sight of thousands of dead amphibians on the road after dark was a wake-up call. “That got us,” he says. Volunteers were enlisted to help animals cross the road during peak migration periods, but even this effort only reduced mortality by about 50%.

Designing Effective Underpasses

To address the issue more effectively, Parren and his team explored the possibility of building underpasses. These structures were designed with "wing walls" that guide amphibians toward safe tunnels. The underpasses are five feet high and wide, with curved sections that funnel animals away from the road.

The design was based on years of data collected on amphibian mortality. A brochure was created to raise community awareness and funding, emphasizing the importance of protecting one of the largest known populations of blue-spotted salamanders.

Proving the Success of Underpasses

After construction, a study was conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of the underpasses. Researchers from the University of Vermont documented amphibian crossings using camera traps, and the results were astonishing. Over 2,000 amphibians used one tunnel in a single season, proving that the underpasses were effective.

The study, published in the Journal for Nature Conservation, found that amphibian mortality was reduced by over 80% in the area with the underpasses. This success has sparked interest from other states and conservation agencies, who are now considering similar projects.

Preserving Future Generations

Parren emphasizes the importance of preserving amphibian populations for future generations. He notes that some species, like the spotted salamander, can live up to 30 years. Losing adult breeders can have a significant impact on population growth.

Recent field trips with the Lewis Creek Association revealed the success of the project. Salamanders were found on their return trip to upland areas, indicating that the underpasses are working as intended. This is a promising sign for the long-term survival of these species.

Parren believes that community support is essential for conservation efforts. “People can make a difference,” he says. “We had a lot of people who supported us, and probably couldn’t have done this without that support.”

The success of Vermont’s amphibian underpasses serves as a model for other regions facing similar challenges. By investing in infrastructure that protects wildlife, communities can ensure the survival of important species while reducing the risk of animal-vehicle collisions.
