Warframe: Old Peace Signals New Era with Primes and Powers

Warframe: The Old Peace is Nearly Here
The upcoming content update, Warframe: The Old Peace, is set to release on December 10 and promises to deliver some of the most ambitious lore and gameplay enhancements in the game's history. This update delves deep into the long-buried origins of the game’s universe, reimagining key systems like Primes and Focus while introducing a wealth of new content. More importantly, it serves as a crucial step toward understanding Tau, a star system that plays a central role in the game’s overarching narrative.
Unearthing the Truth Behind The Old Peace
The Old Peace marks a significant milestone in unraveling the mysteries of Tau, the star system that was once the main battlefield for the Old War—a conflict between the post-human Orokin Empire and the mechanical Sentients they created to terraform the region. The Operator, or player character, witnessed this war firsthand, but their memories of it were so traumatic that they were intentionally erased. These lost memories are a critical component of The Old Peace.
According to Adrian Bott, Warframe’s lead writer, "the Solar Rail between the Origin System and Tau…was initially used for war," but there was once a brief, forgotten era of peace. Through reliving these memories, players will uncover how The Old Peace came to an end. In terms of gameplay, this translates into two major additions: the Perita Rebellion and a major overhaul of the Focus School system.
Perita Rebellion Gameplay and the Tauron Focus School
The Perita Rebellion and 'Focus 2.0' are at the heart of The Old Peace’s gameplay loop. Players will use a new system called Albrecht's Dark Refractory to relive memories of the World War I-inspired Perita Rebellion in 12-minute cycles. During these cycles, players will complete objectives and encounter a final challenge. Along the way, they can collect Tektolyst Artifacts, which are essential for unlocking Warframe’s Tauron Strikes—new ultimate abilities—at the Tauron Focus School.
The Tauron Focus School now orbits Perita, and its rediscovery introduces new upgradeable branches to the Focus skill trees. These branches culminate in Tauron Strikes, powerful abilities unique to each tree. These strikes are designed to elevate the Operator and Drifter’s power, preparing them for the challenges that await in Tau.
The Arrival of Tauron Strikes, Warframe's Ultimate Abilities
Although players have only seen one ability in action so far, each of the trees in the revamped Focus system has its own unique ultimate ability. According to Rebecca Ford, Warframe’s creative director, these abilities are inspired by Shonen anime battles such as Dragon Ball Z and Jujutsu Kaisen. Examples include:
- A super quick sword that leaves dozens of delayed slices in the air.
- A huge hammer that leaves a shockwave.
- A flurry of fists faster than the eye can see.
- An enormous staff summoning a nuclear magic blast.
- A single arrow shot skyward that erupts into a flurry of rain.
- A cursed grimoire brimming with energy that overflows into a giant beam.
These abilities aim to evoke the intensity and spectacle of Shonen battles, and the gameplay trailer for The Old Peace already showcases their impact. Beyond the visual flair, the ultimates also bring a fresh perspective to the Focus system, which has remained largely unchanged since its introduction nearly a decade ago.
The Future of Warframe's Primes
The Old Peace also represents a turning point for how Digital Extremes handles Primes, the game’s Orokin-upgraded Warframes. In addition to the upcoming release of Gyre Prime, along with her primed Alternox Pulse Cannon and Kestrel Boomerang, Rebecca Ford highlighted that the team sees this as an opportunity to experiment with Primes in both narrative and mechanical ways.
Excalibur Prime, a frame long considered untouchable, will be temporarily playable during a mission for the first time in years. The recently released Caliban Prime also appears as an environmental set piece within the story, suggesting that Primes can now play a more active role in future quests. This experimentation extends further with the introduction of the Prime Vanguard.
Primes and the Vanguard Threat
A new boss threat in The Old Peace, the Prime Vanguard is an enemy that commandeers powerful Prime Warframes and integrates them into the game’s newest enemy faction—a militant splinter cell of the Orokin Empire. To strengthen the connection between available Primes and the current in-game story, these enemy Primes will also appear in the next Prime Resurgence rotation. This approach keeps older frames relevant while giving players a compelling reason to revisit their collections ahead of the journey to Tau next year.
Digital Extremes has clarified that Excalibur Prime will remain excluded from the Prime Resurgence, preserving its legacy status for Warframe Founders.
Warframe: The Old Peace Has Even More on Offer
Despite the many additions included in The Old Peace, the developers are framing it as a foundation for the game’s next era rather than a finale. Rebecca Ford emphasized that the team’s guiding principle is experimentation in all things. Even with something as iconic as Primes, "Honestly, the sky is the limit."
