Why Xbox Controllers Still Need Batteries (But PlayStation Doesn't)

Rechargeable lithium-ion batteries have become the norm for game console controllers in recent generations. Sony's DualShock and DualSense controllers, as well as the Nintendo Switch and its Pro controllers and Joy-Cons, all use rechargeable batteries. However, Microsoft's Xbox controllers are an exception, as they have traditionally come with AA batteries. Even the latest Xbox Series X still includes two AA batteries in the box.

This choice might seem like a cost-cutting measure, but according to Jason Ronald, partner director of program management at Xbox, it's more about gamer preferences. In an interview with Digital Foundry, he explained that many gamers prefer AA batteries, so Microsoft offers flexibility by allowing users to choose between traditional AA batteries and rechargeable options.

Leveling Up Your Xbox Power Options

For frequent gamers, going through several sets of AA batteries per year is common. Fortunately, there are alternatives available. One option is to purchase rechargeable AA batteries along with a charging dock. Microsoft also sells its own Xbox Rechargeable Battery, which comes with a USB-C cable.

A full charge on this battery pack can provide up to 30 hours of gameplay, and a full recharge takes about four hours. What’s more, you can continue playing while the battery is charging, provided you have a long enough USB-C cable or extension.

Another option is the Xbox Elite Wireless Controller Series 2. Priced at $200, this controller features a built-in rechargeable battery that lasts up to 40 hours. It also includes interchangeable and adjustable thumbsticks, an additional D-pad, a carrying case, and support for up to three custom gaming profiles. The Elite Series 2 is compatible with the Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Windows PCs, and mobile devices with Xbox Wireless and Bluetooth.

Why Xbox Is Unlikely to Drop Its Battery Preference

In a time when Microsoft continues to increase prices on consoles, accessories, and games, sticking with AA batteries may actually be a smart business decision. AA batteries have been around for decades and are unlikely to become prohibitively expensive anytime soon. Whether you're a fan of AA batteries or prefer rechargeable power, Microsoft gives gamers choices — one just requires a bit more investment.
