Butcher Shop Closes After Owner's Motorcycle Accident

A beloved meat market and deli in the West Valley has been forced to close its doors after the owner suffered serious injuries in a motorcycle accident. Alfred Viscusi, who founded Al's Meat Market and Italian Deli near 107th Avenue and Union Hills Drive nearly two decades ago, has been a butcher for most of his life.

“I’ve been cutting meat since I was 16,” Viscusi shared. “Too many people don’t know how to cut meat. They cut it wrong.” His team made the tough decision to close the business following his accident last Sunday.

“This place wouldn’t be the same without Al. Al makes this place,” said Rebecca Miller, a friend and colleague.

Viscusi described the night of the accident as uneventful. “Nothing was out of the ordinary. Just seemed like it was another ordinary night,” he recalled. However, dash camera footage from a nearby vehicle revealed that Viscusi was riding in the left-hand turn lane for the Loop 303. Instead of turning, he continued forward and hit the median, which caused him to be thrown off his motorcycle.

The crash resulted in a broken spine and leg, along with other injuries. “I thought for sure it wasn’t going to be good,” Viscusi said. Fortunately, he was wearing protective gear, including a helmet, which he credits with saving his life.

Despite the severity of his injuries, Viscusi remains optimistic about his recovery. “It’s incredible. There’s something I got to do apparently. There’s more for me to do. I don’t know what it is, but I’ll sure find it,” he said.

A fundraiser has been established to support Viscusi during this challenging time.
