Artificial intelligence is becoming an integral part of church ministry, with a significant number of pastors and church leaders utilizing tools like ChatGPT and Grammarly to aid in their work. A recent survey highlights the increasing reliance on AI for various tasks, from sermon preparation to communication materials.

Key AI Tools Used by Pastors

According to the "2025 State of AI in the Church Survey Report" conducted by AiForChurchLeaders.com and Exponential AI NEXT, ChatGPT has emerged as the most popular AI tool among church leaders. With 26% of respondents using it, ChatGPT is being utilized for applications such as sermon preparation, research, and crafting church communications. Its versatility and ease of use make it a valuable asset for streamlining ministry work and generating creative ideas.

The data, collected from 594 pastors and church staff members, indicates that church leaders are increasingly aware of the ethical and practical considerations involved in using AI. Nearly two-thirds of those who prepare sermons report using AI tools in their writing process, suggesting that AI is becoming a key component in weekly message preparation.

Frequency of AI Use

The frequency of AI use among church leaders has also increased significantly. While 43% reported using AI in 2024, this number has risen to 61% in 2025, with 25% using it daily. This trend reflects a growing acceptance of AI within the church community, although there remains a cautious approach regarding its implications.

The researchers note that while many churches believe AI can be beneficial when used as a tool, they emphasize the importance of maintaining human connection and spiritual discernment. This balance between leveraging AI's capabilities and preserving personal, spiritual guidance is a central concern for many church leaders.

Other AI Tools and Their Applications

Beyond ChatGPT, other AI tools are gaining traction among church leaders. Grammarly, an AI-powered writing assistant, is used by 11% of church leaders for tasks such as polishing emails, newsletters, and blog posts. Microsoft Co-Pilot, an AI search engine, is used by 9%, while Google Gemini and Canva Magic Studio are each used by 8% of respondents. These tools are employed for research, design, and content creation, highlighting the diverse applications of AI in church operations.

Demographics and Generational Perspectives

The survey also reveals demographic insights, with about 30% of leaders representing churches with fewer than 100 members, and 24% leading churches with 100 to 249 members. Notably, Gen X and Millennials show a strong interest in AI, indicating a broad acknowledgment of its relevance across different leadership roles. However, this diversity also points to potential generational divides in technology acceptance and usage.

Concerns and Optimism

Despite the growing adoption of AI, church leaders have expressed concerns about several issues. These include misinformation, theological accuracy of AI-generated content, the risk of AI replacing personal spiritual guidance, privacy and data security, and transparency and accountability. Nevertheless, 87% of pastors are willing to invest in AI education and training for themselves and their staff, showing a commitment to overcoming these challenges.

The Future of AI in Ministry

Researchers suggest that proactive measures, such as attending workshops, partnering with AI experts, and developing robust AI policies, will be critical for building trust and buy-in from congregations. By taking these steps, churches can harness the benefits of AI while mitigating potential risks.

A separate survey by Pushpay, which collected data from approximately 8,000 church leaders in February, found that AI use has increased by 80% across all ministries. However, the majority of AI use cases still revolve around content generation and editing rather than pastoral content. This trend underscores the cautious approach many church leaders take toward AI in more sensitive areas of ministry.

As AI continues to evolve, its role in church ministry will likely expand, requiring ongoing dialogue, education, and ethical consideration to ensure it aligns with the values and mission of the church.
